McDonald’s CEO admitted the burger giant’s sales have taken a hit as jacked-up menu prices have turned off core customers — and signaled the chain plans to focus on “affordability” this year.

The Chicago-based fast-food behemoth — which has lately taken heat over a Big Mac combo meal priced at nearly $18 — said its global same-store sales in the latest quarter had grown just 3.4%, falling short of the 4.7% growth Wall Street had expected.

The lackluster quarter — which the company also blamed on conflict in the Middle East that has slammed franchisees overseas — sent McDonald’s shares on the New York Stock Exchange tumbling nearly 4%, to $285.97, at Monday’s close.

“I think what you’re going to see as you head into 2024 is probably more attention to what I would describe as affordability,” McDonald’s chief executive Chris Kempczinski said on a Monday earnings call with analysts.

In particular, low income customers making less than $45,000 per year have largely stopped ordering from McDonald’s. Pummeled by inflation, they’re eating at home more frequently as grocery prices come down, Kempczinski admitted.

Despite the uproar, McDonald’s customers should brace for even more price hikes this year — albeit at a slower pace of 2% to 3% versus last year’s 10%, restaurant analyst Mark Kalinowski told The Post. McDonald’s attempts at “affordability” will likely take the form of targeted deals offered on its mobile app, he predicts.

They went from having the “dollar menu” to “$1-$2-$3 menu” to “we make Five Guys look cheap.”

They simply cut the portions in half to make you think you’re paying less

That's known as the Todd Graves pricing model.

I'm convinced no one actually likes McDonalds and the only reason people go there is because of the price. There seems to be some truth there...

Looked at breakfast the other day and one biscuit was $6 while BK was selling the same for around $2.

It will get a lot more affordable as we automate our restaurants and stop having to pay cashiers $20/hr to take your order and hand you food

IOW "Sorry for gouging you the last couple of years, but we'll make the burgers smaller and charge you slightly less after getting busted"

I don’t want to eat anything that McDonalds can sell me cheaply in 2024.

Soon you will be able to go to a McDonald’s and not have to encounter a single employee.

For that reason alone, I think McDonald’s is well positioned to survive far into the future.

Honestly if they increase prices that much, there will be an expectation of quality (both in ingredients and service) that currently isn't present with the McDonalds experience.

The prices at the "major" fast food places has risen way more than Canes, yet here we are with the typical OT Canes shitpost

A Cane’s box having more shrinkage than George Costanza doing a Polar Bear challenge in January doesn’t help matters for Graves.

And the opposite has happened, same with Taco Bell. I swear every time I find something I marginally like they take it off the menu the next time I try to go
