I was just asking my gf if she remembered when fast food places had awnings all the way around the building so you didn't get rain in your window while in the drive thru.
All the places now only have a tiny covering where you order and where you pay. Forces you to roll up in between windows and rain still gets in if there's even a slight breeze.

McDonald’s doesn’t make money on burgers and fries. They make money on real estate.

Cortana Mall was demolished and the property cleared in about 100 days.
I can’t imagine where they disposed of the debris and how Amazon completed this so quickly.

that’s fricking legit.
i’d love to work on this type of project. i’m deep into lean/agile practices as is, so this would be in my wheelhouse.

Architecture is a reflection of how society feels about itself. The mid century modern design trend reflected the optimism of the 1950s in the US. The more traditional looks of the 1970s-1990s reflected a lack of confidence in society's progress. The advent of "planned communities' of the 2000's-present that look like a curated version of 1940s Mayberry should be a hint that Americans are not happy about where society is going right now.
Lately McDonald's has elected to reduce the number of windows, elevate their stores to be higher than the street, and installed more stone and masonry walls. They are following the late hotel trend to look more like bunkers or borderline brutalist in style. They look cleaner but also far less inviting or social.

A former colleague of mine worked for McDonald's corporate for almost 20 years. He always said he worked for a commercial real estate company that happened to flip burgers.

I’m friends with the guy that owns the construction company that does the majority of McDonald’s new construction and remodels in the Southeast. They do lots of other restaurants too, but McDonald’s is their biggest customer. They are one of fifty general contractors that do business with McDonald’s, but they receive 15% of all their construction contracts. It is amazing how fast they do these projects.

The one on Airline @ Prescott and the one up on Plank @ Denham both still have basements.
Pretty sure it was one of these we saw last week. I’m not familiar with the area.
Are the basements for additional dining?

Waffle House also replaces their stores every 20 years and can do it in about 100 days too.
Arent waffle houses basically just a double wide prefab thing?

It took 410 days to build the empire state building in 1930/1931.

McDonalds is a toy and real estate company, the food is just a side line
The Michael Keaton movie The Founder about Ray Kroc was interesting. There is a scene in the movie where they discuss this specifically (the real estate part).

Pizza Hut did the same shite

Our Pizza Hut used to have arcade games and McDonalds used to have play areas. Now they're just trying to get people in and out I guess instead of being a hang out spot. Or maybe people just stopped hanging out at these places so they stopped providing these services at extra cost since it wasn't worth it anymore, kind of a chicken or the egg question.

I just hope they restore / keep the sign. That thing is a thing of beauty.
