All high schools should have programs like this for blue collar jobs. Not everyone is meant to go to college and get a degree.

You can make 6 figures these days working in oil and gas, construction, plumbing, electrical, truck driving, agricultural management and many other blue collar fields without saddling yourself with tons of student loan debt

I've never worked with CDL drivers where insurance allowed them to drive until they were 21.

Not happening for a long time - this same scare tactic was pushed on pilots at the start of autopilot, yet they've still got pilots to takeoff and land the planes and to navigate in bad conditions. Same thing will be there for the truckers.

Probably not a great career outlook considering automated trucks will replace the majority of that workforce in the next 10-20 years

Plenty of bad older drivers driving trucks.

Theres a couple of guys who work construction in summer driving trucks, do ice roads in winter, can't speak English or read at an 8th grade level, yet clear over 100k.

Long hours though.

I underlined the important part of your reply - insurance companies can be stricter than laws on the books, but the law on the books say that 18 year olds can drive within state lines. I've met a few that went from warehouse jobs to driving locally, and they were pretty good at it too. Just have to find the right people who are mature enough to handle the responsibility.

I kind of like the sentiment, but is it not a bad idea to train for a career that may not exist in the near future? Short term, there is money to be made, and lots of it, but you better be prepared to be replaced by a self-driving truck in 5-10 years. Just my opinion.

I'm no avionics expert, but that seems to not really be a great comparison. The difficulty of autopilot in the air is significantly lower than self-driving tech, and aircraft are so much more expensive than trucks that it doesn't make moneytary sense to switch out planes to the newest tech until they are needing replacement anyway.

Trucking companies will be replacing trucks with self-driving trucks. At first, you're right, they'll be manned on case of emergency and in adverse conditions, but when the evidence bears out how much safer computer driving will be in virtually every scenario, it will be seen as unnecessary to have a manned vehicle.

The trucking industry at large has their head very deeply buried in sand about this topic.

Waiting for the first sighting of a big rig cab shaking a neighborhood with dual 12” subs cranking rap, driven by the whitest of white 20-year olds.

The job training stuff for seniors now is actually awesome.

And the tech school stuff that they can get in while in school or directly after they graduate
It's been like that for the last decade, just about every district offers something like this. That's why, as a former educator, it's frustrating when people use the cliche "sChOoLs nEeD tA tEaCh tRaDeS" when they criticize the school system. They do, people's lazy phone addicted kids won't sign up for it because it means they'll have to get their hands dirty and take some time out of their day.

Good luck finding any company that will insure an 18 yo behind the wheel of a semi. Most want minimum 23 yo. And not to poo poo what I wish would happen more (high schoolers learning a trade) but I can guarantee they won’t learn shite in that course and the little they do learn will be forgotten by the time they’re hireable.

Truly self driving vehicles won’t be around in this country until we spend trillions on infrastructure.

Of course we could’ve easily done that the last 20 years instead of spending it on wars.

That's a hell of an idea.

Not everyone is cut out for college.

I think we are farther away from full self driving trucks than 10 years.

What I do think will happen is that we can possibly scale back some of these driver hour restrictions as these autonomous driving features will enable drivers to "pilot" or "manage" trucks on long highway slogs. It's less fatigue for the drivers so they can go longer distances in theory.

So we will get more productivity from our truck drivers within 5-10 years. But I think we are farther away from fully replacing them.

same for "high schools need personal finance classes"... they do. many also have electronics, small engine, etc.

This next generation will either be completely subservient communists or the absolute most freedom loving individualistic people ever.

Will be very interesting to see where they fall
