Truly self driving vehicles won’t be around in this country until we spend trillions on infrastructure.

Of course we could’ve easily done that the last 20 years instead of spending it on wars.
I'd rather that money be in my pocket.

I don't know how California works, but in Louisiana you can drive an 18 wheeler without a CDL if it is for farm-to-market. People make decent money during harvest season.

It's a lot more common in Texas and the upper plains states that have meat packing, ethanol, and pet food plants like Nebraska.

same for "high schools need personal finance classes"... they do. many also have electronics, small engine, etc.

During my career as an educator I tried to direct a lot of kids into the trades. You would be surprised how many kids wouldn't take the class because either them or their parents wouldn't take 2 hours out of their day to sign up for the class. I got cursed out by a parent one time because I told her she had to go to the career center (which is literally 3 miles from our campus) to sign the required forms.

I used to make some nice side cash driving sugarcane and rice/crawfish trucks during harvest seasons.

Ah yes, nothing says bright future like not getting educated so you can take a job that will be automated in two decades.

You boys really don't know what software is going to do to the world do you?

Software isn't going to chain the tires or secure the loads. There will always be a need for people in the trucks - always.

This, the job may one day incorporate more automation on highway stretches but there will still be a driver in the cab to take over when automation can't. There's also more to driving a truck than an arse in the seat holding a steering wheel. Someone will still need to secure the load, tarp the load, pull over and recheck securement after departure, bump a dock, drive the truck down some of these busted up dirt lease roads, etc etc.

The duties of the job may change, but the job will still require human supervision and intervention from shipper to receiver.

Why didn’t you just have the necessary forms on hand? I have to ask this question since I had to deal with similar administrative nonsense when my kids were in school.

Go take a look at predictions of future technology made 10, 20, 30 years ago, the answer is way less than you think.

Because I was just a classroom teacher, you have go through the guidance counselor and sign safety forms and others and most states require them in person. Also, most districts centralize career classes in one location because of financial and staffing reasons so busing is required. I agree it's inconvenient but it's just the reality of things due to low participation and state bureaucracy.

Teenagers who are terrible at driving are going to drive 18 wheeler? Sound idea

Well it seems like they are getting more training than the normal teen. Or even adult that’s never had an I’d. You know, since millions of people don’t know how to get one.

So 20 years making six figures when most college degrees won’t earn you that?

Yeah. 20 years of damn strong job security. And trucking is a fairly easy market in which start your own business if you have the capital.

Flawed logic. It's not 20 years then everything flips like a switch.

Most of these 6 figure jobs will be gone in 5 years, with only last mile drivers and manned automated trucks for long haul making up the majority of the trucking workforce.

Then in the following decade, last mile trucking will be automated.

I thought you had to be a felon to work there
I was at a WM Dist Center in Wisconsin a month ago and there was a Western driver straight out of training that had absolutely no clue how to park a trailer. I went to go help him and he barely had any idea of how to put the truck in reverse, and I'm not exaggerating. I tried to give him the basics but he wound up asking the yard driver to move the trailer into the spot. It's not like WalMart DC's are tight parking or anything either, this place was wide open - just that they didn't have any pull thru's available for him.

I'd say it would be a miracle for him to still be driving and not have hit anything yet.
