Why were there only 6 jurors?

Certain state crimes only require a 6 person jury.

You don't think that's something good for a college educated guy to learn if his parents didn't teach him?

I don't. He's guilty, but he made a mistake. Hopefully he learns from it and gets on the right path.

Nothing wrong with having an organization that teaches you skills you'll need later in life. Imagine you're at a fancy dinner and grab the employer's drink because you don't know any better.

Could the kid just have said no thanks and walked away? The kid that died holds just as much responsibility. We are responsible for our own actions, not the guy next to us.
Just a question so don’t attack me but shouldn’t getting into a frat include things that we know won’t kill us? Shouldn’t we know 100% that if we’re dedicated enough to do what’s asked to be accepted into a frat that it shouldn’t end our lives?

I guess so. Like I said, peer pressure is a bitch, Darwinism prevailed.

I’ve been serving oysters with no forks since I was in middle school

If there’s no fork, it means the oyster is already loosened and ready to eat. It’s bad manners to ask for a fork if one isn’t provided

I often think back on my college days and cant help but wonder what it would have been like to be accepted into a Fraternity instead of being a Division 1 Athlete on scholarship

Ah the ole baseball douche gene never dies inside of former college players.

Talk about the pot calling the kettle black

I doubt the kid thought hey I am about to risk drinking my self to death so I can get in.

I don’t see how the guy who killed the old man in the lower garden district has any shot at trial. It will take 2-3 years to get to the point where they are trying the case (probably been 18 months since it happened, right?), but I expect he will eventually take a deal for 20-25 years and serve his time in Hunt.

I agree.

His lawyers know that a jury of black peers in New Orleans will not be friendly to a white preppy kid that beat an old, defenseless black man to death for no reason.

That would be the quickest verdict in New Orleans court history I think

How much did he drink? It was probably enough that everyone involved should have known the potential risks.

My point is that there should be realistic expectations that IF you are “man” enough/dedicated enough to finish the tasks asked of you, it shouldn’t kill you.

You're so dramatic. Hard to believe? You think all frat boys are evil and violent?

A vast majority of guys I knew in fraternities were really good guys with good moral compasses that are successful in life both professionally and personally.

Every fraternity has a couple douche hardos that take the shite way too seriously and give the rest a bad name.

And I'm pretty sure some boys in frats do change into mature men but not nearly enough of them do if you ask me.

Anecdotal example: My cousin was in a frat and he's one of the best guys I'm proud to know and he's one of the most gentle and kind souls ever where it's hard to believe that he was in a frat. And now he's a married father living a good life with his college sweetheart and their two daughters with a good career going on right now.

At an avg SEC school there are around 40 guys per fraternity who graduate every year. Maybe 2% of those guys end up being a deadbeat/drain on society. There are a lot more that grow up and have successful careers/marriages/have kids

I'd bet if you looked at the avg fraternity member 5 years after college compared to the avg non fraternity member, the fraternity member would be deemed more successful more times than not

Devil's advocate here...

Yet people die from heat stroke from football far more than from fraternity hazing...
