Master plan for proposed Gonzales train station between New Orleans, Baton Rouge chugs along

LINK

Twice-daily trains along the $260 million commuter rail line would connect downtown Baton Rouge with downtown New Orleans. Intermediate stops are planned for suburban Baton Rouge, Gonzales, LaPlace, the Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport and Jefferson Parish.

What’s the point of having a stop at the airport....or really anywhere along the route...if the service is only twice daily and includes no express trains? It’s not really a commuter rail without more regular service and at least reasonably high speeds (75+ mph).

And since this isn’t really a commuter rail, why wouldn’t they also include typical Amtrack -slow service on the existing lines farther north up towards Marksville, Alexandria, Shreveport, and onto Dallas to collect more passengers for this route? Wouldn’t that benefit tourism in New Orleans and help justify the speedier trains that may eventually roll through the Baton Rouge-New Orleans area?

This seems like a scheme for the railroad to get federal dollars to fix a line over the spillway that they’ve ignored for a long time. If that’s true, freight rail should have to yield to passenger traffic on this route.

This is such a joke pie in the sky project. It's not happening.

I kinda defended the NBR bus project in the other thread.

However you will find no defense of this project from me, at least for now.

Is it going to connect the B.R. and N.O. loops?

Last time I read about this, my impression was the twice daily schedule was just an introductory thing that would eventually be expanded.

It’s like the proponents threw together a half baked plan and expect it to happen.

I guess this is a push to get the infrastructure (lines, switches, and platforms) in place now and then hope for the best in the future?

I would guess twice a day would be the start in hopes of building riders.

There are too many people hoping this fails for it to ever work. They would rather sit on the spillway in traffic bitching there are 4 more lanes of standstill traffic in each direction.

I agree, and I think with more buy-in that it could potentially work one day. But twice daily service, no express trains, and an unnecessary stop in Jefferson Parish kind of makes it easy to dismiss as bullshite.

None of that changes the pressing need to significantly update I-10 and Airline Highway between southern Baton Rouge and Kenner.

This is great!! It will give the homeless people a climate controlled place to sleep and panhandle.

I would much rather see an I-10 bypass of BR built if we are throwing 260 Million away.

I doubt a stop adds more than five minutes to a ride

The following things are guaranteed to happen:

1.) It will take 15-20 years to build.
2.) It will cost over 1 billion dollars.
3.) State Representative Bubba Joe Redneck's cousin finna get a fat contract.
4.) No one will use it and it will be a rusted ruin within five years of completion.

Let’s say this happens (it won’t)...

How many billions of dollars will be flushed down the toilet? It’s definitely more than $1B.

What is this fascination with passenger rail? It only works in densely populated centers such as the north east where an hour ride can transport hundreds of thousands of people at a time.

This is just a federal money grab
