After riding trains up north over the last few years, I’d like to see this happen.. stops such as Gonzales and la place are short and not inconvenient.. the twice daily schedule isn’t enough though

i don't know why you all are even arguing or whining about this proposed project. that shite will not ever happen unless there is a direct positive impact for North Baton Rouge.

My experiences with the state of Louisiana allow me to surmise that this project will be a $900 Million dollar goat rodeo. And you seem to be the one who has never been around the exits of a public transit hub. Check out downtown Houston and get back to us.

What is this fascination with passenger rail? It only works in densely populated centers such as the north east where an hour ride can transport hundreds of thousands of people at a time.

It’s the nostalgia and romance. And who doesn’t like trains?

I remember as a child hearing the horn and running fast as I could to climb the ladder to the top of my slide on my swing set in the backyard to see over the brick wall and watch the train go by from my neighborhood.

(Intentional run on sentence to help convey the excitement of a child watching a train)

Seriously this is where a couple baws chime in to say they would ride the train to a Saints game a couple times a year.

Charge $20 each way and it won’t be. This “culcha” you speak of has no desire going to one anothers cities.

They also just made the new passenger terminal at MSY on the opposite side of the airport from where these tracks are.

just for reference to fuel the discussion. the Houston MetroRail has 246,104 riders every weekday and over 2 million riders per year. Ridership Report

What’s hurting it more is it’s placement. It’s on the opposite side of the metro from the bulk of the business fliers.

Better highway network in Baton Rouge and a few more connections to domestic hubs will help them a lot. The goal should be more connecting flights out of BTR and more non-stops to international destinations out of MSY.

I guess this is a push to get the infrastructure (lines, switches, and platforms) in place now and then hope for the best in the future?

This is my impression. At least with respect to the Gonzales train station the article says they won't move on it until the BR-NO rail is a reality. Whatever that means. But yeah I dont envision this thing being a reality in my lifetime.

Nothing physically wrong with the airport. It’s actually pretty nice, pleasant, and has reasonable fares at least for me. The runways would be more than adequate for even 10 times the amount of traffic and there is even plenty of room to expand the passenger terminal if they needed.

It just needs to be located along I-12 somehow.

You can’t really compare this train idea to Houston metro. This idea is heavy rail between two cities. Houston is light rail within the city center.

Houston metro is only 20 miles in total system length. It’s essentially the New Orleans streetcar, which also has about 20 miles in total system length.

A better comparison would be if you had a train connecting Houston and Beaumont that ran twice a day and was slow. How many people do you think would ride that?

This.

And what are people traveling from Nola or other cities going to do when they get to their stop in Baton Rouge? It's not like most things are in close walking distances and the public transportation around the city sucks are is not in place.

And the bubba's have already pointed out that they aren't going to ride on something that may have black people on it.

A lot more potential riders in Houston than in New Orleans. And a lot more potential riders in Baton Rouge than in Beaumont.

Tulsa to NW Arkansas or Montgomery to B’Ham would be a better comparison. And neither of those have commuter rail service that I know of. I don’t even think there is a consideration for it.
