Duh, you plug the truck into the house so it charges itself while charging the house.

Ok, so his truck has to stay plugged in from when he gets home at 5pm to 9pm as a generator (from the article) and then plugged in all night to recharge the batteries via solar?
He only has to have it plugged in if he wants to make money from it. It’s obviously not charging from the PV at night. These programs only export when they need to, not cycle every day.

I'd rather have a dedicated battery bank.
Both is better. I don’t see any reason to not let my car make me some money when I’m not using it.

People have done this 10+ years ago with a Prius. Nothing new.

Window unit in a space that small...I bet the truck is frigid. Probably awesome to sleep in.

I don’t think so. VPP programs are pretty new and I haven’t heard of any others taking EVs because we just recently got the controllers to work right and approved by the utilities.

I mean, no more "neat" than anyone with Miller or Lincoln Ranger bolted in the back of their truck can do and have done for years.

Yeah, he hooked it up to a couple of EVs to power it. They are awesome. They take NO CARBON footprint to make their batteries, our greatest enemy CONTROLS the battery production and you can go about 290 miles before recharging for just a couple of hours(hopefully) and get on your way
What could go wrong????????

I'm just saying this feels like a Ford ad.
That's because it is. EV sales have fallen off a cliff along with their used values. Guarantee you this is either govt propaganda or a Ford financed article.

I'm in the process of installing a battery backup system for my house. It would cost about 22k to have the same battery size as the F150 and it would instantly switch on, and be available to my family when I'm not home. Plus my generator will be able to charge the batteries

What system are you going with?

It would be more than that. Those are 98kWh minimum. That’s over 7 PowerWalls which would set you back at least 55k.

Absolutely not.. The O&G baws war can't ever take a back seat. The electric car must always be raged against! Raaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhh!

Tell me where EV use has a net positive on your life or the “planet”.
Cost $6 to fill up instead of $40. Wife doesn’t have to go to the gas station and be harassed by the homeless people.
CCGT is 75-300% more efficient( 30% ARR) in producing energy than gasoline, and still supports Louisiana.

Sol-ark 15k inverter with ruixu 16kwh batteries. Inverter is 7k, batteries are 3.5k each. Plus labor. 30% tax credit. After the tax credit I should be under 11k for 32kwh battery backup which should last me at least 4 hours in the summer, and over a day in the winter.
The sol-ark has a 20ms switch over, so wouldn't even notice a power outage, unlike a generac that would be out for 3 seconds or so. (Computers and WiFi wouldn't have to reboot)
In the past 15 years, I've needed my portable generator for an extended period once.

That’s becoming a popular setup. I’ll probably do a Franklin when I do my solar later this year since it’s one of the few that can load command my generator.

I mean...anyone with two brain cells to rub together knows that current technology doesn't make something like this sustainable. BUT these bastards plugged their house into their car AND IT WORKED.
That's pretty tight.
It doesn't have to be mutually exclusive.

quote:I worked for the CO utility in substations, major line rebuilds, you name it. You think I don't know the grid is fricked? It is. It's bandaids every year. But that doesn't mean we should stand still, technology wise. New innovations that are more widely adopted are always followed by an impetus to improve the infrastructure reliant on it. Heard of a car in the 1920s? Heard of interstates? (Yeah, yeah, Eisenhower built those so we could mobilize the military more effectively, but they still knew that more and more people were utilizing cars than were on the road 20+ years prior)
1) Power grid: The US power grid is fragile and antiquated. The Feds haven’t allowed a new power grid to be built in decades.
quote:They'd decimate any vehicle on the road produced after 1995...your point?
2) Electromagnetic pulse set off by China or Russia would decimate the US power grid.
quote:Yeah bro, frick innovation and trying to progress at all, right? Gimme an old fashioned candle, these light bulbs will never stand the test of time.
If there is no power how is someone supposed to use these modern marvels?

This is a common strategy with the Tesla Powerwall system. You charge overnight and during off-peak mornings, then use the battery system during peak.
LA Entergy rate for peak is 3x off-peak. So you charge your batteries over night, then run off of them from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. (peak hours). You could use solar, but it isn't a requirement if you are just chasing rates.

Most of the decent storage setups can do it now as long as it’s accepted by the utility. I was abusing old NEM agreements and time of use PG&E rates back with the old LG Chem batteries in 2019 so bad they drug us in front of the PUC.

No, because it’s not “neat”. It’s asinine.

Not to worry, if you leased the truck, like you should. Turn it back in in 24-36 months. No one should own a test bed like this.
