You don't even want to know. My wedding was in NYC. From some of the posts, my wife's dress was more than some people's entire wedding.

Part of the reason we are doing it in Hawai'i is to get away from the family members I don't like in Florida and the family members she doesn't like in the Northeast.

Yeah that is a plus of a DW, you don't have to invite people out of obligation. You can just say you want to keep it a small close friends and immediate family type thing and people understand.

My advice... Go to Justice of the peace and handle it there. Then have a reception for close friends and family.

Ours was somewhere around 7K...

Can't tell you how many people I know that had to borrow money just to pay for their token engagement ring.

If you have to borrow for the ring, you can't afford it.

I have been to a few 100k+ weddings in NYC. Those same wedding would be about 50-60k in New Orleans.

Less than $1000.

Married at a friend's home by judge. Had a party about 1 month later with live band (part of the New Leviathon Oriental Foxtrot Orchestra) in the new home we purchased. Spent the $ on downpaymet for home. Wedding and reception a waste of $, IMO. Still married, 33 years now.

I don't know. Her parents paid for the wedding and mine paid for the rehearsal dinner.

but if you want to cut some costs, alcohol is a big one

Brew the beer yourself... or have friends brew a beer instead of giving a gift.

We also have a free venue, so that's helping costs a lot.

Im getting married soon and my girl is completely on board to elope to Hawaii or St Lucia. Realistically, we'd be looking at a $10-$15k wedding with the size of my family and the amount of alcohol my family drinks. We can probably get away with spending around $6k if we elope. To me, a big wedding seems like a complete waste of money. Id rather put the money we will save toward a down payment on a house or toward paying off her school loans.

Btw, her parents said they would only give us a grand or two--same with my parents. Both of our parents are encouraging us to elope.

Didn't pay for my wedding. My wife's uncle did try to convince my FIL to just give us 20k and not have a ceremony to "save (my FIL) money". So I guess a little upward of 20k. We got married in the church and had the reception at my inlaws house but it was bomb as frick so idk how much.

i am not sure of the exact cost because i had nothing to do with the planning. i do know that my father in law offered us 10K if we did not do the wedding. so i assume somewhere in the neighborhood.

this was 19 years ago though, and we had a fairly big wedding

About $50k. We paid half, FIL paid the other half.

We stayed out of debt, and I am pretty sure he did too.

I think our wedding came out to about 35k. In laws paid for it. It was a very good deal for getting all the stuff we did in NOLA. We had live band, buses for guests, the whole nine yards.

I recently went to a wedding that I know they spent upwards of 75k and I have no idea what the extra 40k was spent on compared to ours. It's amazing how much more money a girl is willing to spend to have stupid shite like raised monogramming on their napkins or something stupid like that which nobody notices.
