Who has decorations on hand at home though? I can't think of anyone I know with decor beyond the art on their home's walls...

WTF? That's not spending "real money" for a photographer.

Ours was over $4k, but we had to add on to the big package because my wife come from a split family and we needed extra stuff for the extra set of parents.

$500 is nothing for a photographer.

ETA: Our wedding was around $28k total, $3k rehearsal dinner, honeymoon another $3k, and our rings were about $8k. We paid for the rings and half the honeymoon. My parents covered the rehearsal dinner, in laws covered the rest. We have a small amount of debt (<$800) at zero percent that will be paid off by May, and we got married 2 months ago.

Well I suppose if you're paying $500 just for someone to take pictures for 2 hours then yea you're paying a lot.

But $4000 for someone to do bridal portraits, 3 photographers the day of the wedding shooting from when they get ready through the end of the reception, editing, CD catalog of the photos, and 2 photo books...isn't really that out of the realm.

A LOT. And save. Currently planning a wedding.

Random things are what kill you...flowers, photography, the band.

13k in 1996. That included 3k for the live band, 1.5k for flowers. Forget the rest of the breakdown....

We paid a third, my parents paid a third, her parents paid a third.

No debt.

My wife and I paid for it. Not sure of the total but the bar tab is real easy to remember: $28888 before taxes and tip!!

Had a blast, though.

Random things do you kill you, but I wouldn't consider these three staples random. Add alcohol to the list and you have the things that even every guy knows is at a wedding.

The venue we're having it at is telling me that shots aren't allowed

If i'm paying for an open bar shots are happening.

Nice attitude to have going into the wedding.

I think our wedding (about 125 guests 18 years ago) was around $10,000 + honeymoon. I waited until after I finished grad school & had a decent job so I could help pay for it. Dad asked how much I needed, but I never gave him a figure, just said give me what you feel comfortable giving. In-laws also chipped in some, which mostly went for the honeymoon. Both of us are kids of professors who were approaching retirement, so we were realistic and knew they didn't have a ton of cash to hand over to us.

Catering hall/food/booze was the biggest chunk, photography was a lot also. Call us cheap, but we only had beer, wine & champagne at our reception. It was a noon wedding/1:00 reception though, all our friends seemed cool with it, and neither of us have families who are huge drinkers. A wedding later in the day and we might have done the open bar.

Either you do it small and inexpensive --- not cheap --- or you pay big bills. It is a choice that needs to be made on both an emotional and financial level. Personally, I like the inexpensive route better. But that is a decision the couple and close family members need to make.

First time around cost $10,000 and the marriage lasted a year. Second time around, I spent $2,500 for a small wedding and it has lasted 18 years so far.

the average wedding these days is $30,000

Probably will spend that on my daughter in a few years

Total waste of money but I only have one daughter
