This thread makes me so glad I'm not that poor.

Well this whole exercise is pretty pointless if you just assume you have all this nice expensive stuff

OK< I could live on $35k a year if all the stuff I had now came with me and was all paid off.

Cheap?

Sure, depending on the area.

Cheap and safe?

Not so much

Or borrow it and pay nothing... unless you break it. I borrowed a backpack from my Dad for a few trips when I was younger.

Or you live in the poorest place in the nation. Either way.

I live in a nice neighborhood. Why can't you just accept people can comfortably live on 35k or less a year? Obviously there are lots of people in this thread who are doing it or have done it.

I'm sure you did. All while saving for retirement and owning a home. Basic math be damned.

I've done week long backpacking trips in CO and NM for less than $500...

I went to Moab and Santa Fe for a week earlier this year for sub $600.

Durango and Pagosa Springs the next month for sub $500.

All the while spending $100+ on beer on the way to each destination, eating wherever I wanted in town, and hitting every brewery I could on the route.

I did not own a home. I told you I paid $400/month for rent that included all utilities.

I think most people are answering this question

Married men , could you live by yourself on 35k a year?

The second you stop saying you can do whatever you want on your income, I'll accept that you get by on it.

The actual question based on the OP is more than that though.

BWHAHAHAHHAHAH 35K a year lets see

North Dallas:

House Note: 2K minimum
Car Note: 400-500
Gas/INSU/NTTA: 350
Personal Devices and Streaming: 100 (that includes Phone)
Food: 300 (600 if you are single and dating Uptown women)
Utilities: 140

This doesnt include things that most Americans carry like CC Debt, Student Loans, etc.

So Adding all that up gets you a net of 3390 a MONTH. Again thats if you dont have any Student Loan debt or Credit Card debt.

You are delusional if you think 35K is going to let you live large and in charge.

You didn't own a home and save, stipulations clearly made in the OP.

Where is this magical place? $400 for rent with utilities seems impossible unless you are in section 8 or something

The girl in the office next to me owns a house and just recently traveled to Greece and Italy.

She probably makes no more than $45k.

So yes, even with the added "owning a house" stipulation, I think I could.

Remember, I live in Shreveport, not ballin' Old Metairie

I was boasting and told her that if I were single I could make a budget that would allow me a house, and still save on 35k a year.
