I'm not saying you were miserable. I was just saying you couldn't afford jack shite outside of the necessities. And I'm right.

First, it's borough, second, there's five in NYC. Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn, the Bronx, and Staten Island.

This is one of those questions you can ask to make a point (a correct point), but no matter how right you are, you're going to lose, especially when asking your SO.

BTW $35k/year here is not feasible. You'd be living on a govt subsidy.

Depends on where you live! In NYC... I don't think so.

I know a lot of areas that you could though. 650 for rent. About 100 for utilities, 35 per month for cell phone. Used car and INS about 250. Food..... depends on if you are a fit person.

But over all... yeah I could

It would be very hard to live alone (no roommates) in NYC and still be able to save money each month. Your only chance would be to live in VERY shitty conditions in a shitty neighborhood, or to get very lucky with an affordable low income housing lottery. If you win one of those, you can get a nice apartment for way under market rate. But it's called a lottery for a reason.

Most people who make $35k in NYC have roommates. In that case, it's much more doable. You can find a room in a good neighborhood for $700.

Jack shite, a new vehicle, trips to Chicago, Tampa, big bend, Nashville, Memphis, Austin, Denver, OKC, NYC, Poconos, ft lauderdale, destin, new carbon road bike, new kayak, new golf clubs, countless passes to music festivals. All over the span of 3.5 years until I got my first legit job with my degrees December 2014.

But yes, jack shite is on the list.

Last thing, millions of people in NY and LA live on these type of salaries and somehow make things work. Now that I'm older I couldn't go back to that but its not impossible.
There are NOT millions of people living in NYC who make $35k and are able to live alone and save any substantial amount of money. The people who manage to do this are extremely lucky because they are in one of the few rent controlled apartments that are left, or they won an affordable housing lottery so their rent is cheaper than market rate.

No problem.

Cell phone $50
Insurance on vehicle $80
Electric bill $100
Water/Sewage $50
Internet/TV $100
Gas for vehicle $100 (assuming 1000 miles a month at 20 mpg and $2/gallon) Probably really underestimating this one since everyone keeps talking about their paid off truck
Groceries $300
Health insurance $160

We're already at $940, and we haven't factored in rent, play money, buying anything besides groceries, saving for retirement, etc.

Plus whoever said Dallas is cheap must live south of I-30.

One bedroom shacks in Addison typically start at 750. Lets not even talk about Uptown, Deep Elum, etc.

I hope my kids make the same decisions. I bet your parents are proud :-)

WORK ETHIC is priceless. It will carry you far in the working world. Don't ever stop working your arse off until you work your arse off so far you earn it. You'll enjoy it more and be a happier person overall. Congrats on graduating :-)

these are my numbers from back then

quote:

Insurance on vehicle $80

$50 - I only had liability

quote:

Electric bill $100

way cheaper...especially in winter months as I never turned on the heat

quote:

Water/Sewage $50

like $15...

quote:

Internet/TV $100

no cable, internet only for $60

quote:

Gas for vehicle $100

probably accurate

quote:

Groceries $300

more like $200

quote:

Health insurance $160

for a single guy? pretty sure my health insurance was less than $100/month

so my numbers are more like $650, which like you said, $300 at this salary is huge

obviously some months might be better than others with gas and/or electricity

For a single male??

Maybe $150. Maybe.

Hell this week I bought food for 4.66 days (3 meals a day, no dinner Friday) on <$22.

The median household income in Mississippi is $36k. Household.

A single man could definitely live on $35k. Might not have all the luxuries you desire, but you wouldn't be hurting.

That is why you marry a woman who works her arse off. She is less inclined to spend money. I find the stay at home moms spend the most money because they are bored.
