I think some people could do it easier than others based on how they were raised. Not that growing up non poor is a bad thing

And no, Shreveport is not big and the cost of living is low.
Exactly. The question from the OP was could "I" do it and well I live in Shreveport, so the answer is "yes"
My rent with a roommate at the time was $400/month (that included everything)
I doubt I could do it in NOLA or Seattle or NYC

$5k more per year in salary translates to like $300/mo more in take home pay.
That's a significant bump.

Yeah that helps but it's not like that's a complete game changer, especially in a metropolitan area
15% extra is a gamechanger IMO. For example, it allows for a car payment, or a significant bump in retirement savings.

At my place in Oklahoma, I could easily.
Where I stay in California, not a chance in hell.

You are way out of touch, man. I live very comfortably on 30k and do pretty much anything I want. I actually have a decent amount of money saved for retirement for my age. I have a car that's paid off but far from a beater. I rent a decent house in a good neighborhood with 2 roommates($500/mo is my rent). I also have a decent chunk of cash sitting in my bank account right now just waiting for me to figure out what I want to spend it on. It's not difficult at all.

No you don't. Or you don't want to do anything that cost money.
ETA: In AL, you're taking home $830 every two weeks, before factoring in any retirement. So $1660 a month most months. Minus $500 for rent, that leaves you $1160 for utilities, groceries, gas, insurance on your truck, and anything else. That's not a lot of money regardless of where you live. And you supposedly are putting away money for retirement also? You aren't doing "anything you want" on that little money unless you don't want much of anything, which is fine.

Man, we live a spoiled life on the O-T.
Yes its easily doable (and I speak from experience, at one point in my life I did it easily) if you can do these 4 things:
1. set a realistic budget and use it
2. Keep small or no credit card balances, the interest along will kill you and its easy to start spending beyond your means
3. Be relatively healthy, even with insurance one major health incident could break you
4. Have fun but be up front with women about your financial situation, it was super easy because at that age many women didn't care as long as they were having fun and still about to go out.
I was somewhat young and lived in a medium-major city, but I was comfortable and had tons of fun. That said, there are some drawbacks:
1. during those years I saved very little for retirement, luckily I was young
2. didn't travel as much as I should have when I was younger, I still went to alot of places, but wish I would have done more
3. had to rent and wasn't able to buy a home to start gaining equity
Last thing, millions of people in NY and LA live on these type of salaries and somehow make things work. Now that I'm older I couldn't go back to that but its not impossible.

OP isn't just getting by like the people you're describing, his claim was
quote:
I was boasting and told her that if I were single I could make a budget that would allow me a house, and still save on 35k a year
You aren't getting a house and saving on $35k a year by yourself. If OP would have said a reasonable number like $45k or $50k, this thread is nothing but agreement. But he went with the ultra low number, and here we are

I don't need a new $45,000 car or a $4500 vacation every year. I have simple tastes. I'm telling you I do it and it's not hard. I'm sitting here trying to think of something to spend my spare $1500 on and I can't think of anything.

I didn't say you needed any of that.

Obviously nobody is taking 2 weeks in the south of France on that money, but there are countless trips you can take on a serious budget for cheap.
Hell my income has taking an astounding leap since I completed my degrees and I still do trips on a budget. I'm planning a trip to Glacier, Banff and Jasper for 15 days right now and my excel spreadsheet is spitting out less than $1,100. I'll probably cut another corner or two just to get it under $1,000 to say I did it.

My point is that you don't even have the money for the cheap trips based on OP's stipulations.

I do
With 5k less
You're out of touch

Easily. I've lived on far far less.

Yeah, of course... it would require a lifestyle change though, that's for sure.
I've certainly lived off of that (or less) before.

Or you live in the poorest place in the nation. Either way.
ETA: And you aren't doing what the OP stipulated, so your experience isn't particularly relevant.

I've done week long backpacking trips in CO and NM for less than $500...

By yourself with no one else contributing? And factoring in all expenses?

You're out of touch with reality with your king ranch F-150 and crotch rocket.

I've got neither of those things, but thanks.

yes...
that $500 was basically all gas and food money
obviously getting the gear was more with upfront costs, but once you have it, you have it
but even if you went with someone else, how is that a negative? you are still traveling...when you make less you have to get creative
