quote:And yet NYC is one of the greatest cities on earth.
Just to be clear, last I read, 40% of people living in NYC are below the poverty level.
How do they get by? Government subsidies- EITC, SNAP, EBT, etc...
Your tax dollars hard at work to fund their slumlords.
Seems to be working out alright.
edit: and living in this city is worth every tax dollar I pay, IMO

10 years ago is not relevant.
My numbers today would be the same
health insurance and gas would be less actually
so would food since I have a garden now

Just the jambalaya:
2 pounds of diced pork I recall was on sale for $4.xx
Rice was $1.49
Chicken stock was $0.99
2 small onions were ~$1.50
Garlic was ~$0.99
I don't like bell peppers in my jambalaya and yes, we can factor in $0.08 worth of slap ya mama I used from the can. So I'd venture to say the jambalaya itself was less than $11.

Nope, I'd be broke between student loan payments and living expenses.

And the bread, turkey, condiments, bananas, oranges, and chocolate milk? All that for $11?
ETA: And the Kit Kat, don't forget that.

Sandwich rounds were $1.99.
Turkey was the kicker for $4.xx.
Half gallon of milk was $1.50.
Bananas and oranges at the farmers market which was a different stop, were dirt cheap as always for $4.00 even I recall.
Albertsons rewards knocked off $2.xx so was in the clear.
Similar to the slap ya mama, we could factor in the mustard and mayo to be roughly $0.08 per squeeze, and the chocolate syrup in the fridge to be $0.07 per squeeze.
At the end of the day, it is obvious you have a silver spoon in your mouth and have never even remotely had to pinch pennies.
Hell I don't even have to these days, but being single, young and just working 55 hours a week and running in the evenings with my dog, why not save some coin here and there during my basic weeks.

Or I just call people out when they say bullshite like "I can do whatever I want on $30k (ETA: or $35k to stick to the premise of the OP)a year salary while saving for retirement."

That's what the Bama guy kept saying. But My statement still stands at $35k.

here is some completely anecdotal evidence that is irrelevant for this thread, but...
My dad never made more than $60k through my teenage years with 3 kids and a stay at home wife
yet somehow we managed to buy and live on 30 acres of land, build a brand new 2 story house and take 2 month long road trips every summer
so I think $35k for a single person is quite doable

But I still think you have a silver spoon in your mouth and you'd be one of the first to go during a zombie apocalypse.

Can we all just agree that $35k isn't enough money to do whatever you want and let this die already?
no one said that. Almost whatever I want. You would have to be making many billions of dollars to truly do WHATEVER you want. I'd love a corvette from each decade. I'd love a summer home on a lake in Minnesota. I'd love to never work again and own my own jet to travel the world year round. I'd love to own my own island in the South Pacific. I'd love to own a Major League Baseball team.

You can't do almost whatever you want on your $30k salary. Sorry to burst your bubble.

the late 90s obviously
I still think it translates somewhat
family of 5, owning a new home, 30 acres of land, and taking long vacations in the late 90s seems equivalent to a single guy today...maybe?
