Narcissistic maybe, but I tend to think it’s people grabbing for attention. They will post that they are safe hoping 100 “friends” will “like” it !

Agreed 100%. It’s attention seeking as one poster had said and a good example of how pathetic social media makes us all. We post the most ridiculous shite on there thinking that anyone cares and when somebody hits like it’s creates a dopamine hit.

Facebook in general is the height of narcissism.
The “happy birthday to my kids” post and pic collage, when your kid is a child and isn’t even on FB. Really examine that - what is the root reason people do that? It’s a “look at me and my kid and how great they are and how great my life is”
The “happy anniversary to the best husband in the world!” Post. Why don’t you walk over to your husband 10 feet away and tell him to his face how much you love him? Because the post isn’t about him or your love. The post is “look at how perfect our life is”
And we’re all susceptible to it. We’ve all made posts on social media to bring attention to ourself. It’s human nature to want to feel important. But it’s toxic. If you really examine the motivations to why people post on FB, and the validation they’re seeking from it - to me it has become a platform that has evolved to feed the narcissist in all of us and ultimately will slowly and slowly make us a more self-centered population. Think we’re already seeing that to some degree.
Very well put.

I particularly enjoy it when someone in Slidell marks themself safe from a storm that hit lake Charles. I have a couple attention whore friends who do it every chance they get.

OP, this could be a George Carlin bit. Totally agree.

Almost as bad as posting a passive aggressive post on Tiger Droppings, instead of posting it on Facebook for Mike to see himself. Here's your attention though.
Whatever you say, Mike.

Psssst, if you don't draw attention to yourself hardly any of the other attention whores will ever know you are there.

Check out Joe Rogan's episode with W. Keith Campbell. It was 3 or 4 episodes ago. Campbell is a social psychologist and just wrote a book on narcissist. Its pretty interesting.

I mean, if like say another 9/11 or worse were to happen, I think that’s fine, but I can’t think of a moment since Facebook was invented that has called for marking safe.
As the poster mentioned earlier, the Vegas mass shooting is a good example of when it would be useful, I'm sure there are others.
In general it does seem narcissistic and unnecessary, but I'm not Karen so it doesn't bother me. If somebody feels the need to mark himself as being safe, more power to him.

Is marking yourself safe on Facebook the height of narcissism?
no
Facebook itself is the height of narcissism
think about it...do I or anyone else really need to know anything about you that I don’t already know or that you could easily communicate to me via non public means?
you are on Facebook because you want attention

I always wonder about the person that’s not safe. If I’m stuck in the attic of a flooding house, marking myself unsafe on a FB is pretty low on my priorities. Even if I did, it’s not like someone would call 911.

We should have a thread just for posters to check in as safe

Hah, "Mike" was probably also 150 miles away. Those are the best.
