Map showing % of children enrolled in Private Schools 1-12

I'm about to get hammered for pointing this out but bring it on. I'm about to rant. I'll be the first to admit that Louisiana's public school system is absolutely terrible. I'm forced to acknowledge this fact because I'm actually considering staying a raising my kids here (crazy, I know) but I am considering it nonetheless because i'd like them to be close to their grandparents/family. So, I began researching where the best public schools are. Neither of us are Catholic, or religious for that matter so I don't want to put my kids in a private Catholic school. So here I have been looking all our area within reason for some DECENT public schools. None. Nothing. Plenty of private options though...
Anyway, I decide to expand the search. I've looked all over the state. Nothing even remotely on par with what Texas offers. My conclusion is that if I want my child to have a decent education in this state then I would have to get him into a Magnet/Charter school or go the private school route. We all know there are certain factors that are out of our control that contribute to the fact that our public schools suck. I won't fault anyone for not putting their kid into a bad school intentionally, but it's a problem when our only options are private or charter/magnet. Why have we not adopted the ISD model? We have too many private schools in this state and it's taking good students out of the public schools system.
We have the highest percentage of private schools anywhere in the country in relation to our population. It's ridiculous. So many private schools detract from the public system and leave the public schools with kids/parents who either don't give a shite or don't have the financial means to pay for private school, and it's one of the many reasons our education system ranks dead last in the nation.

Doesn't take a genius to figure out that the private schools are 95% white and the Public schools are 70% black. It's an under-the-table form of segregation.

There are decent options for public schools in Louisiana if you know what you're looking for. I sent my kid to McKinley. It's perfect for him. He wants to be a ufc fighter when he grows up

You have to be connected or have an exceptionally smart kid (or both) to get kids into a good public school in Louisiana

And really a lot of how well he does in public schools depends on what gang he gets into. I sent my kid with a box of honey buns on the first day and the Latin Kings took him right in

So other people should put their kids on bad public schools, yet you admit you do not want to put your money where your mouth is and put your own kids in the public schools.
The problem isn’t parents putting good students in private schools.
The problem is the bad public schools. Fix that and lots of people might opt for the public school. Right now, with few exceptions, anyone with the means would be crazy to put their kids in public schools.

Taking mostly honors classes at some public schools isn’t a terrible option (Northshore area)

It takes a village approach.
A friends parents who gives a shite can hopefully overcome the lack of a good parent. I will say that where I went to public school this happened. Kids that would have otherwise been left behind were shown the way by kids who had incredible parents.
Is it the responsibility of the good parents? Or excuse bad parenting? Hell no. Just saying how introducing better students into the equation can change the school.

Being in one of the few parishes that have great public schools is quite excellent.
I'd like to see a per parish breakdown of that map bc I'm sure Orleans, Jefferson and BR make that outcome as radical as it appears.

Looks like Hawaii is above 15% also...so there’s that.
A good public school system keeps money flowing for the state. I’m not sure exactly how it’s atructured in Louisiana or the other states with a high number of kids in private schools, but it seems like some of the deteriorating Rust Belt states have similar issues. Again, I would assume it’s an unofficial segregation situation.
The LA school system needs to be stripped down to the roots and restarted. Unfortunately, it may be too late for that to work.
