Imagine being an Ivy League student and going to your teacher to explain how you can’t read a book, rather than just reading cliff notes and faking it.

I have a young child (elementary school) that is not getting A’s in his reading class. He can read and he’s got a great memory so I was concerned about his ability to comprehend what he’s reading, so I decided to read the book he was assigned.
The book sucks. It’s uninteresting discussion about a school girl and her feelings about being forced to learn a skill she doesn’t think she has to learn. The book was boring as nothing of note ever happened outside of how the main character felt.
I’m not complaining to the teacher or school because in life, sometimes you have to read stuff that bores you and you don’t want to read, but I’m an adult. This is a 3rd grader. For the love of God find stories that are interesting and instill desire in children to want to read
I read it again a few years ago and was still entertained and learned

Get rid of the standardized testing racket and you’ll get back to kids reading actual full books.
It isn’t surprising that kids are doing what we’ve taught them to. Primarily reading excerpts and short stories in order to cram in all of the concepts that a kid will be tested on at the end of the year was eventually going to cause issues like this.
And I’m sure the introduction of things like AI, which kids will lean on to avoid reading further, will make this worse.

All of our kids got books when they were young, took monthly trips to the library, and saw us reading as well

Middle class kids would not be going to college, or even high school.
They would be put into apprenticeship after middle school, usually in the same field as their fathers or conscripted.
Education for all was started with Grant's Presidency in 1876.

I’d bet a bunch of them have their parents email or call the professors landline to explain it
The students can’t even and need Xanax to cope with the anxiety

You are wrong
You said reading entire books puts you at risk of falling behind in school. No. I’m not wrong. That is one of the dumbest things I’ve ever read.

think this is a huge part of it. One prof said his students cant even concentrate on a single sonnet,
I can't concentrate on Sonnet either.
Morgan or Ertz on the other hand....

school reading entire books can put you at a major risk of falling behind. You can spend weeks reading a book of literature and if you interpret the writings wrong on your book report you make a worse grade than someone who didn't read the book and used cliff notes. Also, you may read entire chapters and miss what the pop quiz might ask because you don't remember it. However, all of the important material would be in the cliff notes anyway.
So frick getting educated, just learn enough to pass the test?
That's the problem with kids and the education system these days: they don't care about educating just know enough to pass a one time test then throw that knowledge away.

There’s no secret strategy to reading a book, you just read the fricking pages.
If you're only reading the surface level
That's a book that should be taught in high school

Music is more important than reading. The only books I read the whole way through in high school out of the dozens assigned were the Hobbit, Great Expectations, and Lord of the Flies and made a 36 on the English part of the ACT. Csb

but going to college just to have a book assigned to read and give a report on is dumb AF.
Sure doesn't sound like college. I had to read plenty. I haven't been assigned a book report since 7th grade.
