If you go out to eat you should know that whatever you order and whatever you estimate your bill to be that when you figure your tax, you double the tax and add that to the bill at the least. Its not a hard concept.
Double the tax is my baseline. Standard service that's my tip, better than average I give more, if its very good service I give more. Service has to be real shitty for me to give less than that. I can only recall once.. well maybe twice where I left less. That's just how it is here. If you don't like it then you don't have to go out to eat at a restaurant. I know in other countries they don't tip and the servers are paid well enough to not need to be tipped, but that's how its done here.
There are a lot of other things financially I am fed up with that gratuity doesn't even make the list. Home insurance increasing, medical care, the fact that I can't buy a decent baseball cap for less than $30.. It just bothers me knowing it probably cost them less than $5 a hat and anywhere you look, a hat is over $30 because people will pay anything for whatever so a lot of people are willing to pay that much so that's the going rate. shite like that are things that people can have control over, but are willing to overpay for some bullshite but then bitch about a tip.

Restaurants wouldn’t have to raise prices 20% to pay a reasonable wage to their employees. Maybe it’s 5% or 10% and the servers get paid $20 an hour or something.
I just threw out 20% because that’s roughly what I tip.

People are so damn cheap when it comes to tipping

You don’t tip your sandwich artist?

I would prefer it if we eliminated tipping and restaurants just increased their prices by 20%.
I believe some restaurants in New York and Seattle tried it and sales declined due to high prices and they switched back.

of course, but I issue a 1099 with the tip

Lots of tipping talk in Seattle going on with the new minimum wage over 20 bucks.
Even the liberals who believed service staff needed a living wage are balking at tipping with no actual service being delivered.

California is the same. Server minimum wage is over $20 an hour. Why exactly are they getting tipped on top of that?

I agree, but he didnt have the mate. I was baiting my own hook the whole time.
Thats why I meant the guy driving the boat owned the boat and the charter company. So, all the money for the charter was going to him anyway. Wasnt sure if you should tip him on top of that, but I did.

And result is restaurants that used to require reservations are half empty at their busiest times. People are done with $65 filets, plus 10% + sales tax + 15-20% tips. And everything is a la carte. Not even a side of 3 bites of lettuce included.
A hamburger and fries is close to or over $30 today.

Here's a tip, study hard & get a degree with a trade so you're not begging for tips

We don’t go out and sit down anymore because of it. We either eat at home or order to go. And no I don’t tip on carry out orders. I don’t care or buy the whole “wElL sOmEoNe HaS tO bAg AnD mAkE sUrE iTs RiGhT!!” or that it causes a disruption to service inside. Not my problem. Complain to corporate.
I have a buddy that tips a flat $10 wherever he goes out and his logic makes sense. Why should I pay someone more for bringing out a steak when it takes them the same effort to bring out chicken tenders?

but I base my tip off the quality of the service.
they all get at least 15% (would have to be absolutely atrocious to not give at least that), but if they are really good at what they do an exceptional job, the tip goes up.
I have 3 simple rules:
1. Make sure my water glass is filled.
2. Check on me from time to time. Don’t hover, but if I need something, be handy.
3. Have my check ready when I’m ready to leave.
All of these things accomplished, you’re guaranteed a minimum 20% from me. Friendliness also goes a long way with me, so it’s easy to get even more out of me than that.

That's the effect it has on me, too.
I barely eat out anymore. That's not the only reason why, but it's as significant as any of the other reasons.

What about people who drive for doordash? I know someone who does doordash and hasn't gotten a tip in days and is pretty pissed off about it.

One thing the Euros consistently do not understand about American culture is our tipping. It's the one thing I agree with the Euros about.
