quote:Ok. What law prevents a private school from teaching that right now? That’s right, there isn’t one either. Be involved in their school regardless of if it’s private or public. I think some of y’all would be very surprised on how many extreme liberals also teach at private schools, especially religious affiliated ones run by actual brothers/sisters.
See the reaction to the Florida bill and you might understand how parents might be wary of what their kids may be taught at even highly regarded public schools.

It’s all about the peer group. We still live in Louisiana, not a Houston suburb. You’re going to get a better peer group at a private or Catholic school no matter what.

Both of my kids go to OLL. We started them for mother's day out and have been there for over 5 years. Last year my son was doing poorly in K at the beginning, and we were afraid OLL was not for him, but he turned it around in the second semester and is now making high B's low A's. I think it had to do with COVID and the teachers wearing masks, and he could not understand the communication. We looked into Christ Ep. and they seemed impressive but I did not like the fact that they dont wear uniforms. It did not seem to have structure there. It's sort of like a do what you want when you feel like it environment. One example is someone who coaches there (but is only there after school) told me that he had to go there during school hours and was walking down the hallway. One of his athletes saw him from the classroom, screamed out his name, and ran out to say hello and talk.....during a class. That seemed ok to do. It seems to me to be more for the artsy fartsy types. I was impressed by the faculty though.
The good thing about OLL is that if your child struggles, there are funded programs they have that gives your child special attention (one on one) to get you on track.
Another thing I like about OLL is a lot of the parents went to private school on the southshore, so it is like a Jesuit, Mt. Carmel, Brother Martin, etc wrapped into one place. We have a solid response from parents regarding donations and funding projects for the school. My chiropractor was an OLL grad about 10 - 12 years ago, and he named all these teachers who are still there, so that tells me they take care of the teachers. It is a good community.
Tuition wise, it is the best kept secret. The more kids you send there the cheaper it is. You will be paying at least double for each student at Christ and Cedarwood. From what I have seen, OLL specifically prepares the student for St Paul, Jesuit, Hannan, etc.
People around here are going to tout public education, which I admit that I have seen a quality product of students/graduates from the public school system in the area. I am more about being part of a positive and supportive community. You know you will be around good people. Many of these people make sacrifices to send their kids there, and appreciate being there. No matter how nice the public school system is, it is free. There will always be bottom feeders who could influence your kid in a negative way. Private schools don't put up with that.
My wife went to Cedarwood and refuses to send our kids there. I think it is a good school but it is too small, and because of that I would think my kid would struggle when he makes the jump to a large school like St. Paul.
Congrats on going private. You will love the community whatever you choose.

My only complaint about OLL is the principal may be the least personable school administrator I’ve ever met. Otherwise, we’ve been happy for the past 8 years. Great families, overall. There have been a lot of unhappy families this year with the lack of effort to get things back to pre-Covid normalcy, e.g. class parties/birthday lunch where parents used to be invited and field trips.

Yeah I take my daughter to ballet lessons and there are three moms of OLL. One said she calls the school often (this was several months ago) to bitch about shutting us out due to COVID. I was entertained by the stories.

Is MHS no good?
Nothing wrong with it. The cost was not an issue and we just wanted to try something different than we had. It worked out because we moved to the Covington High district in 2019 and even though I went there it wouldn't be my first choice. both my sons got/are getting full rides out of state and I guess they could have done that well at MHS but too late to find out. Just wrote the last SPS tuition check lol.

My cousin lives in Covington and sent his kids to Christ Episcopal for lower school.. once they reached high school one went to Christ Episcopals high school (was brand new at the time) and the other actually carpooled with two other girls to Sacred Heart in NOLA. I actually know a few people who cart their kids across the lake for high school now.

That's very well-said and I agree 100 percent with you.
Cedarwood is a privately owned, for profit school, and it shows.
A lot of kids leave CES every year because of bullying. The school doesn't do much to stop it.

I currently have one at OLL and one at St Pauls, who went to OLL. I have to say that OLL has prepared my older one beyond expectations for the AP courses as they moved on. Just my opinion, but I would steer clear of the smaller Cedarwood/Christ Episcopal types of schools.

OLL has treated us well so far, and my kid is doing very well education wise. I can’t speak to the others, but we are very happy here.

I thought people move to the northshore so they can get away from the southshore heathens and be able to send their kids to public school? You mean that’s not true?

I hear St. Peter’s has a good basketball team.
