That's an interesting way to describe threatening to stab a store clerk to death for the contents of a store's cash register.

I wouldn't disagree this guy's probably served his time. I could even buy a reasonably presented argument that his sentence was excessive. However, the overall tone of this piece is total horseshite and, in my view, does ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to further whatever cause it's trying to further - more likely does the opposite.

Seems simple.

Don't do the crime if you aren't prepared to do the time.

We need to enact transport to a penal colony instead of imprisonment for repeat offenders

While life is ridiculous, it’s not like he snuck $50 out of the register when nobody was looking. He robbed someone at knifepoint,

The amount of money stolen isn’t the issue.

Alabama state law at the time mandated that since it was his fourth offense, the judge had no other option than to sentence him to life in prison.

Oh well that a man lost 30 years of this life for some petty arse crimes? He's not a violent criminal

The amount of time he served was probably excessive, but robbing someone with a knife is actually something a violent criminal would do.

I guess he never understood what life without parole meant.

the $50 isn’t as important as the fact that he threatened someone’s life with a knife. Sentence may have been harsh, but he may also have continued armed robberies had he got off light.

4th offense. The judge probably saved someone’s life.

Of course ABC News is trying to make a Red State look "evil" when it comes to minorities, etc. I knew before I opened the link that A. it would be an article from a Red State, preferably one in South, and B. Be written by a liberal media person.
I further know that C. there are probably many whites incarcerated in blue states for something similar, but the author doesn't care to mention that.

If he would have stolen 50,000 dollars instead of 50 would he have had the same sympathy? How does the value of the thing stolen change the acceptability of the act.

No judgement here, I'm genuinely interested in the opinions about this.

It’s in the article. He was originally charged with 3 counts of burglary, all from the same incident which is strange in and of itself.
