In all honesty, I think someone with a decent understanding of how wolves/dogs attack has a very good chance of killing an attacking wolf with a knife. Especially if they are expecting it. Get the wolf to latch onto anything other than your neck, then go to work with the knife. You might get fricked up but the wolf gets dead.
For the average joe with no preparation, I think a wolf kills the human 50+% of the time. That’s assuming the wolf is actually attacking said human with intentions to kill them, which is obviously extremely rare in real life. If the wolf gets anywhere near your neck, you’re fricked.
I don’t get why people would choose a baseball bat over a knife. You basically have one shot with a bat. If you don’t take him out with that first swing it’s basically a paperweight. You can do some serious damage with a 6” knife at close quarters.

Are you a wild animal of roughly human size? If not, he's not fricking interested.

No, it's Daniel Cormier with a bat vs a knife wielding chimp riding a wolf.

A good powerful swing with a bat is usually good enough to put just about anything down with one shot if placed right.
All these dummies choosing a baseball bat to kill a wolf are envisioning themselves hitting a Hank Aaron homer on the beast and walking away unscathed... ain't gonna happen.
I'll take the knife and give it my left arm so I can stab the thing a couple of times. If I'm lucky, I'll have hit the jugular or some other vital organs.
It's gonna hurt, but an alpha male with a 6" blade could kill a wolf if he saw it coming.

Depending on the breed and access to food wolves range from 70lbs to 180lbs and from 4'to pushing 6' in length.
Even grizzly bears can get frustrated by the little ones.

So what's the full scenario. It's hunting you in the forest or just thrown into a pit with it.
Pit. Knife and probably die of bloodloss. While it eats me and maybe dies of bloodloss.
Forest hunting me. Hole up in a tree or den in a cave and use that knife to carve some spears.

Dude wolves are fricking big. A human fighting a healthy wolf with a bat is still a fight that I favor the wolf in, but much better odds than a knife IMO
Problem with a bat is you have to have a full swing to have an effect. If the wolf gets in close it helps you none. With a knife you can go for the wolf’s throat even if it gets on you

I don't think there is a single wolf on earth that I couldn't kill with a bat.

Average male human vs 1 wolf. You get your choice of baseball bat, or knife(6 inch blade). Who ya got? I think most people could frick a wolf up. The reason they are so deadly is hecasur they are a pack animal by itself it is just an overgrown dog. People all the way.
Better question... Barbara Walters, your wife, your mom. You've got to frick one, marry one, and kill one...Go!

A wolf is amazingly athletic. I'm thinking they're getting in close no matter what. Knife.

Did the thread on man vs bob cat in a cage ever get settled?

What? You would be dumb as frick to choose a 6 inch long blade over a 30-something inch long bat. Not just with the wolf, but against anything. Human, dog, mountain lion, etc,...anything.
NOPE! I take the knife so I’m can save myself some time and pain and just slit my own throat because I know I’m not winning.

I'd go knife. You basically get one swing at the wolf with a bat and if it doesn't go down you might be fricked. A 6" blade can still be used even if the wolf gets you to the ground.

People don't respect edged weapons enough. In close quarters a knife is as or more dangerous as a handgun. Any male with any kind of coordination and strength could dispatch a wolf. You have hands that can grip and block. You could limit the wolf's attack with one arm while you slash and stab with the other.

I could have sworn one of those survivor shows covered this.
For your best chance, you give the wolf your arm and hope he latches on and try to keep your wits a little. Then fight like hell with the knife and try to hit something important.

From the dining hall, it sounded like a fight — a midnight scuffle between feuding workers at the Cigar Lake uranium mine.
A security guard hopped into her vehicle to break it up, and for a split second, her headlights illuminated a scene that was anything but a fist fight: a wolf with its jaws around the neck of a 26-year-old kitchen worker.
The truck’s arrival spooked the wolf away and the security guard, who has declined media interviews, sprang out to provide first aid.
An adult gray wolf can easily bite through even the thickest moose bones; a fleshy human neck provides little obstacle. A few more seconds and the worker likely would have been dead instead of recuperating in hospital.
“A single wolf basically pounced on him,” was what a mine representative told the press.
Wolf attacks aren’t supposed to happen this way, but wolves don’t exactly act as expected in Northern Saskatchewan.
On the very rare occasion that a North American wolf bites a human, the animal is usually rabid or surprised; a hiker startling a wolf feeding on a moose carcass, for instance.
But this wolf had apparently lain in wait for the young mining camp worker.
