I’m confused by the timeline in the way this article is written. It says they found her body Monday, but that he took his life Sunday while they were mustering (?) to locate her. When did the avalanche occur?
I was imagining him wandering around for an extended period of time before finally giving up. Not spontaneously doing it while they were beginning to search.
Either way, what a horrible, shortsighted outcome.

Title needs fixed. I wish I had started it yesterday but was busy.
HK was a bad arse. I can not believe what happened. I'm saddened beyond belief by his choice to take his own life.

He searched. He knew she was dead that's why he didn't wait.
I wish he would've asked for some emotional help.

Avalanche happened Saturday. He took his own life while they were still searching for her Sunday. They found her Monday. I guess by the time Sunday rolled around and they hadn't found her, he figured that was it. Articles say they started the slide; I wonder if he blames himself for causing the slide and feels like it's his fault she died.
Sad story.

That's exactly how black diamond portrayed it. They caused it and he couldn't handle his guilt.

Here's the official preliminary report from the Gallatin National Forest Avalanche Center

With unbelievably heavy hearts, we are sad to report there was an avalanche fatality on Saturday, October 7th. The incident occurred on Imp Peak in the southern Madison Range, approximately 20 miles south of Big Sky. Two skiers were caught, one was fully buried and killed.
On Saturday, two skiers hiked 6 miles from the Upper Taylor Fork trailhead to the north couloir of Imp Peak. Near the bottom of the couloir around 10,000’, they triggered an avalanche while ascending on skis with skins. The avalanche was 1-2’ deep at the crown, approximately 150’ wide, and 300’ long. The slope where the avalanche released was 38-45° steep with a north-northeast aspect (photo, photo).
This area received one foot of snow since October 1st, which was on top of 3-4 feet of dense snow that fell since September 15th. The avalanche was a hard slab of wind-drifted snow that collapsed on a layer of soft old snow underneath, and slid on the old snow from late September (photo).
Both skiers were caught, skier 1 was partially buried and skier 2 was fully buried. Skier 1 searched for skier 2, was unable to locate her, and then hiked himself out from the area. On Monday, Gallatin County Search and Rescue recovered the body of skier 2. They located her with avalanche probes, buried 3’ deep. Alex and Doug went in for the recovery and accident investigation, and will have a full accident report available later this week. Our deepest condolences go out to the family and friends of the skiers involved.

Knowing how close my spouse and I are, I can understand. He probably was hoping he would be joining her in the afterlife...... I hope he was right.

Is it possible they weren't supposed to be skiing in this area the avalanche occurred?
Or they were a reason the avalanche occurred in the first place?
I've heard of people needing to be rescued from restricted ski areas by emergency personnel. Seems ridiculous.
Very sad story all around.

They are the reason the avalanche happened. Reports were there was a foot of snow on top of 3-4' of hard crusted snow. They triggered it unfortunately.

Then it's not so much a tragedy as it is just unfortunate they didn't respect warnings and now 2 people are dead.

I'm sure his immediate shock and guilt caused him to react irrationally-I think a lesson that can be learned here is that if a case like this happens to someone you know, don't let them be alone, even for a second, in the immediate aftermath. Maybe with therapy and the right support system, he could have pulled out of it and made something more of his life.
Then again, maybe not. Who knows?
