As much as I want to judge the man I don't think I can. I'd wager many in south louisiana, including me, have had more than 12 drinks in a night before multiple times. Just think how many people do that for tailgates around here alone and survive.

for all I know they were going easy on the gin after they saw how much we were drinking, all I know is that my friend and I ordered, finished, and paid for 21 triple Tanqueray and tonics, each, this was back in the day of the 2 for, 3 for, 4 for happy hours, don't think that's even legal anymore

Don’t remember the details but back in the late 80’s early 90’s there was a bar in new Orleans that something like this.
