That headline oversimplifies why it would take more than his shitty $550 steps. Is $65K insane? Probably but there's a lot more to it than just throwing down some treated lumber and pre-cut risers.

They aren't even handicapped accessible.

You're exactly right.

These threads always bring out the clueless types when it comes to actually building things.

ETA: Downvotes from idiots. Love this place.

This is a midleading article. Just off the top of my head:

1) material costs were $550 and he received private donations

2) he volunteered his time and homeless time

3) he doesnt have proper license or ibsurance

4) Canadian version of ADA will force it to be torn down and corrected.

I'm sure a chunk of that money was meant to go to engineering consultants and inspectors of all types. these simple things prevent future lawsuits.

Yea bad grammar on my part. ADA compliant would have been better.

Quit with your reasoning. We should just be able to build shite in public spaces for public use without any research if it saves money now!

If the union is strong in Canada, they'll probably just have this guy murdered for tapping into their honeypot.

I mean it shouldn't cost $65,000 for some stairs. But his shite looks rickety as hell. What does the lawsuit cost the city when someone gets hurt on the stairs built by a man without the qualifications to do so and his homeless helper?

How did he even spend $550 on supplies? That's about $150 of lumber and a couple random other things for support.

$65k may he right but that's stupid. I could see $10k but I know for any kind of government job that's absurdly low.

They're completely ADA accessible. See that sweet hill to the left of the stairs? That's a fun-arse wheelchair hill.

I would not step foot on that death trap.

The stairs have been blocked off by tape and they will remain that way until city officials come up with a solution.

Bids to tear down the stairs start at $30K.

I completely understand that the stairs aren't up to code, etc, etc, etc.

The irony is, if you read the article, that the city was fine with the rocky slope and had no plans to build stairs until he did it. Despite multiple people falling down. It appears they only got interested in spending a butt ton of money once he fixed the problem.

That being said, I fully realize you can't have citizens running around and undercutting fat government titty suckers by building things for pennies on the bidded dollar.

I'll just donate a few grand to the next mayor's campaign. Isn't that how city contracts work?
