Man arrested by BRPD in 2020 shooting death allowed to enroll in BRPD Academy in 2023

When you hear them use the buzz words, “21st century policing” and “best practices”, this is what they are referring too

Valdry began his training at the Baton Rouge Police Academy on September 25, 2023.

The central issue at hand is that despite Valdry’s lack of conviction for negligent homicide, he was arrested for a felony. BRPD policy stipulates that an academy applicant is disqualified if the “applicant has been arrested for a felony or misdemeanor (expunged arrests still apply).”

BRPD policy specifically states that a felony arrest is an automatic disqualifer. Convictions isn’t required

I’m not defending that guy, and PD should always follow their policy, but it does draw attention to a policy that seems odd.
Why would being arrested be cause for exclusion? Not everyone arrested is even charged with a crime. Shouldn’t it be contingent on conviction or guilty plea?

That would be some serious bullshite and probably a civil rights violation to some extent. There's plenty of situations where someone can be wrongfully arrested, and it gets cleared. Not saying this is the same scenario, but as mentioned, an arrest does not mean guilty.

There’s not a civil right to employment by BRPD. In the field of possible candidates, weeding out those that were arrested may eliminate some otherwise good candidates, but it may also prevent hiring some idiots too.
Are we really having a problem with the exclusion of someone who accidentally shot someone from becoming a police officer with a gun? He can be both not guilty and not officer material at the same time.

He said it was a suicide, she was shot in the back.
