Mamou accent vs Lafourche accent

The bayou accent is different from the Cajun prairie accent, but it is subtle. I can’t quite figure out what makes them different, but I can tell them apart when I hear them. And second question for any bored linguists, why do these differences exist?

As a cunning linguist I feel like I should be here.

Even Denham Springs & Gonzales have different accents. It’s interesting how different people can sound such a short distance apart.

Not legit unless they have their own haircuts.

Everyone wears the same white rubber boots at the end of the day

It tends to happen when people don't leave a 20 mile radius for their entire lives.

For a century or so, the Atchafalaya Basin meant that bayou Cajuns that settled more to the East and their language and culture were effectively cut off from and developed somewhat separately from their superior prairie cousins who settled more to the West.
They make some good seafood gumbo, though. I'll give them that.

Same with La Place, Reserve, and Lutcher/Gramercy

Because Denham is redneck and Gonzales is cajun/german
Mamou and Pine Prairie are less than 10 miles from each other and the accents are world's apart

The Ville Platte accent is one of the thicker accents, and it’s practically in Central La.
There are also cultural differences between prairie and bayou Cajuns.

Bayou Cajun accent with a NOLA twist. Prairie Cajun is without the NOLA twist.

This is what I expected before moving to Louisiana. I was disappointed.

I'm as Cajun as they get, from Vermilion Parish. I think water boy sounded like some Mississippi redneck.

That's because Gonzales is coonass and Denham Springs is redneck. Gonzales is mostly Catholics with French, German, or Canary Island heritage (the town was named after a Canary Islander). Denham is mostly Protestants with English and Scotch-Irish ancestry. Two completely different cultures on opposite banks of the Amite.
While the Bayou and Prairie Cajuns are ethnically identical, the differences are caused by long periods of relative isolation and adaptation. The Bayou Cajuns were trappers, cane farmers, and fishermen. The Prairie Cajuns were primarily ranchers.
In Louisiana, most of the groups basically all lived and died in the same places for 150 years and only relatively recently became more interconnected. Heck, prior to Katrina, New Orleans had one of the largest populations (per capita) in the world of people who had never left the city of their birth. Heck, most people in New Orleans rarely left their NEIGHBORHOOD! Each neighborhoods had a distinct accent, culture, and architectural style. The same was true for many of the regional cultures throughout South Louisiana (Chalmette, Houma, Lutcher, Gonzales, Lafayette, New Iberia, etc). It wasn't until Katrina that we saw wide-spread shuffling of these cultures outside of Baton Rouge.
