2 years in ICU
13 years in surgery. Ran the daily schedule for 3 year. Enjoyed surgery a lot.
I did PICC and midlines which I got paid $75 per line extra. One year I did 250 lines.
Went back to NP school. Been doing Occupational Medicine for the last 2 years. Wish I would have gone back sooner.

I always found the ICU nurses to be the most helpful.

Not a nurse, but my advice would be to get a job in the ICU at a level one trauma center hospital right after graduation. After 9 months or so, take a traveling job in California where you can make 6 figures easily. Save money when traveling

This is what my step-son did. Worked E.R. and ICU at University for a couple of years. When covid hit took a traveling job in California. Just had a home built outside of Austin and heading back to Cali. in a month or so for another stint. Making it hand over fist.

Get a year under your belt then hit the road as a travel nurse. Cali money is ridiculous. Check out Hawaii too while you’re at it. Then apply to an NP program and start working towards your APRN.

Don’t get stuck working a shitty med surg or tele floor. Work in a specialty area (ED, ICU, OR) or an ancillary department like quality, education, infection prevention, etc. Glad I got out of patient care when I did.

I deff didn’t know how bad staffing issues were till I saw first hand

Serves the Admins right. They wanna get all tyrannical over the Wu Flu and mandate experimental vaccines. Now they can go suck rocks and pay out the azz for personnel. Even if my health improved to where I could work again I'd never go back to healthcare. Screw them all.

ER or ICU

The learning opportunities there are the best and cross train to many other places.

Get a year or so under your belt and if travel is still a thing, GO!!! The money and chances to live elsewhere for free is hard to beat.

This is a Louisiana based website. If you are in Louisiana (and can) get the hell out!! It is a wasteland for nurse salaries.

This is why they bang the so many female nurses... Their boyfriend automatically assumes she is just hanging out with her gay coworker.

I think that if you overview all of the great ideas you can see that it is a very flexible field and you have the option of doing lots of different jobs within the profession. I started out humping OT because that was important at the time, then I moved into a job that was more aligned with being a father. It definitely isn't a mistake to go into this field. So many opportunities.

Try to whine or complain less than school teachers to civilian non-nurse (non-teacher) professionals.

A RN with OR experience can crush it in sales related to surgical products, etc.

This is true if…..you understand that you are not in charge and can let your ego take a back seat. Additionally, understand there is more to device sales than just clinical knowledge which you don’t need a nursing degree to understand. Business acumen and emotional intelligence are just as vital.

I’m a CRNA. Been one for 22 years. Was a RN for 1 whole year. I worked in a CVICU right out of school. The best advice I can give you is go to anesthesia school. It will be the best career choice you will ever make.

At this point we are so understaffed, I don’t care where you work. It was bad before the pandemic and now is just laughable. Are people just not working anymore? Anyways, I will advise you to hold off on the NP route. That field is flooded with no jobs anywhere and floor nurses making more. I know some NPs that went back to the floor bc the bonuses are great right now for a 4th shift.

Do 2 years in an ICU or ER. You will learn everything there in 2 years (you don’t know anything now). Then get out of the hospital. My GF (no pics) I convinced to do that works at a couple of clinics (iv hydration stations, Covid checking at TVs and movies) more money less hours. She is currently working on NP school.

Where is the closest aesthetic school in Louisiana and what is the average salary? Advise for someone working in NICU for 8 years.
