Only 23 of 181 died in that? Wow, I expected all 181 to die in that video.

Only two survived. Both were crew members at the very back of the plane sitting facing the rear.

Nuts dropped. I'm guessing it's not an -800, or you would have said so.

I’d love to fly -8 but all my airline has is the 400’s.

Damn!

I remember what sounded like a bomb going off in Bagram AFB in 2013, turns out it’s was a plane crash. Plane wasn’t loaded properly and nose tailed shortly after take off, only a handful of people on it

One of my favorite places on Earth is the LH lounge in FRA where there are nothing but -800s and A380s parked. Beautiful. No matter what model of 747, if a person has a brain, you think, goddamn, that's beautiful. I don't get art, but I get that.

Whoever downvoted me for this, you need to take a couple of laps. It's like saying you don't get hard for an A-10 gun run.

I think most would be most fearing a nosedive into the ground. Once the plane is actually down that "worst case" scenario has been avoided. But like I said, they had no idea...lucky for them it was so fast they likely didn't even know what happened or feel pain.

Amen. Have you read Joe Sutter’s book? If not, definitely check it out.

Is this really happening? Black Box and Voice Recorder stopped recording 4 minutes before incident.

Blancolirio also talking about this.
He says that losing flight recorder like this, at the time of the bird strike, could indicate a major electrical issue.

He looked at 737 tech / spec info and the data recorders are powered by the left bus (primary) and right bus (secondary). I believe these come from the generators on the #1 (left) and #2 (right) engines. If those go down, there is an APU on the plane but they probably didn't have time to start that. In this incident the APU was never started. There is a battery on the plane but the data recorders, apparently, are not powered by the battery.

Investigators now have to figure out why the data recorders stopped working when they did. Maybe bird strike on #2 engine and inadvertently shut down the #1 engine.

My very limited understanding is there was something like 30 mins of back up battery power that would immediately kick on if both engines were shut off. Basically there’s no way the plane power just goes dead from engine shut down. But beyond that, maybe there’s another reason for additional loss of electrical power.

ETA: is there any word on the 2 flight staff that survived? I’d assume they have a lot of invaluable information?

I believe battery backup for the black box wasn't required until 2010 and the Jeju jet was built in 2009.
