If Esplanade wants to survive, the answer is simple, make it an outlet mall or put stores people will come there for. Look at Lakeside, they have the only Apple Store in the area. That place alone brings droves of people to Lakeside.
Those stores have to want to come to Esplanade and they don't.
Esplanade mall is over. This is probably the last nail in the coffin.
I expect it will be closed by 2018.

Even the coffin store (dealership?) left.

I think Esplanade mall is going to go bye bye soon.
Another Katrina casualty.
When I was in high school, Esplanade was the mall to go to. Katrina shut it down, stores/shoppers moved to Lakeside, and it never recovered.

They should tear down the Esplanade and build up those giant dirt hills back like the had in the 80's. Was dirt bike paradise.

To be fair, most said this about Lakeside circa 1998 when the theaters closed and there was nothing there except for Penny's.

Sorry, Esplanade was well on its way down before Katrina. The Hispanic invasion of Kenner is what has finally killed it.

duh, now. It's the nice mall. Lakeside used to suck so bad.
I used to hate shopping there. Whoever turned it around, I wish they would take over Esplanade.
If you went to lakeside circa 96-02 it was really shitty.
They did have a K&B inside, and a cigar shop that sold to minors, so that was cool.

What's going to happen to all of the millions of square feet of retail space in this country that are going to be vacant in the next decade because of the internet?

malls have been slowly dying since the 1990s in case anyone has been paying attention

Esplanade was the place to be in the late 90's/early 00's. Lived in biking distance so as a kid I was always there.

didn't a development group buy the mall a few months ago?

I believe so.
And the new movie theatre is pretty nice so I'm not sure the place is quite dead yet

Not factual. They also had and still have a Dilliard's at that time. Lakeside is one of the most successful enclosed malls in America.
The Esplanade was sold in 2003 from the original ownership to Mills Corp. Mills filed bankruptcy in 2007. They intended to completely reimage the property with a Palace theater and Bass Pro Shop. That never happened after they went bankrupt. The mall was sold for $10 last year to a company that specializes in redeveloping distressed mall assets. I would imagine they knew and/or expected for Macy's to exit.

You will be wrong. It was just bought and will be revamped. They are even putting a midrise residence next to it were the original movies were located.
Kenner is on the move brah

The news just said that Sears, an anchor store in the local mall here, would be closing too.
The mayor apparently said they would break it down into smaller spaces.
Online shopping was mentioned as a big reason.
Another reason is because it's fricking Sears.
Their Christmas catalogs were the GOAT back in the day.
