"Luxury beliefs" - interesting article

Basically, the jist is that due to the increased accessibility of luxury goods the wealthy have shifted more towards unique/bizarre beliefs and ideologies to separate themselves from the masses.

I think this is a good explanation of why the so-called elite for the need to preach to us normal folks about every aspect of our lives.

In the past, upper-class Americans used to display their social status with luxury goods. Today, they do it with luxury beliefs.
quote:
One example of luxury belief is that all family structures are equal. This is not true. Evidence is clear that families with two married parents are the most beneficial for young children. And yet, affluent, educated people raised by two married parents are more likely than others to believe monogamy is outdated, marriage is a sham or that all families are the same.

Apparently having enough money to be insulated from reality is a growing thing.
And yet they claim capitalism hasn’t spread success.

I wish I had the money to separate myself from reality. I see some fricked up stuff in real life.

Hence rich elites are taking the same stances on vaccines that the barely-literate mommy on facebook does.

A single affluent parent can get along a lot better than a poor one. That's not to say there won't be issues, but it won't be a struggle to keep food on the table.

That actually makes a lot of sense.

I think his point about religion is also very accurate. Whether you agree with organized religion or not, the unifying/community aspect can't be denied.
quote:
Another luxury belief is that religion is irrational or harmful. Members of the upper class are most likely to be atheists or non-religious. But they have the resources and access to thrive without the unifying social edifice of religion.
Places of worship are often essential for the social fabric of poor communities. Denigrating the importance of religion harms the poor. While affluent people often find meaning in their work, most Americans do not have the luxury of a “profession.” They have jobs. They clock in, they clock out. Without a family or community to care for, such a job can feel meaningless.

My favorite quote from the article which I believe explains a lot of the rampant SJW-ing on social media:
quote:
It’s possible that affluent whites don’t always agree with their own luxury beliefs, or at least have doubts. Maybe they don’t like the ideological fur coat they’re wearing. But if their peers punish them for not sporting it all over town, they will never leave the house without it again.

Hey look, a right-wing tabloid printed an article ridiculing the left.

True but how do we define affluent?
Someone making $120k/yr makes a great salary but a married couple making $60k each bring in the same with average salaries. Of course adding another person to the equation means added expenses but $120k doesn’t go that far. Would that individual be considered affluent?

In the Bay Area they'd be working poor. In small town Louisiana they're in the country club set.

This needs a little examination. The trend away from mainstream churches is in part due to the politicization of religion (right and left).

Like the writer of this article, I'm too busy to do research and provide facts. Its easier to just lean on assumptions. Although it is a fact the NY Post is a right-wing mouth piece.

It's also a product of industrialization and urbanization and it was going on way before it became trendy among the elites. I don't disagree with the author's premise but it's not the whole picture.
