A lot of kids from up north going to SEC schools lately. Even the out of state tuition at LSU or Florida is cheaper than their local colleges.

And it’s a huge boost to those schools budgets too. They’d like to keep at least 20% out of state, but those numbers are now closer to 35%. Likely higher for LSU, Bama, Florida, etc.

In 20 years I don’t think LSU and Ole Miss will look or feel the same as they have.

Anyone else find figures today astronomical? Look at that number!

Construction costs have gone craxy since Covid, but that's high as frick even for 2025.

And I'm pretty sure this is being done by RISE, same developer I'm working with to build three residence halls on UT's campus currently.

Last fall was a mess. Not sure how the housing folks fcked up, but they were short by a lot for freshmen housing needs. They ended up “paying” locals who would agree to live at home, putting some kids in hotels for a short while, and quickly renovating some spaces to add more rooms.

The only resolution is either massively increase admissions standards (reducing the growth in enrollment) or built a lot more housing.

Hope the stuff they are building is good quality. I don’t think 1,200 beds will solve the issue entirely. Those enrollment numbers are staggering.

It’s lucrative.

That trend won’t stop unless the locals complain.

Straight from the university of Alabama’s website. Took me 15 seconds to find it, less if I would have trusted the Google AI result. Incomprehensible how stupid some of you are

There’s ways around it, and many do, but a lot of the housing needs are driven by this rule

Daughter works at another SEC school in admissions. They’re expecting a nationwide enrollment cliff .. something about decreased number of babies born in past years meaning less kids attending college in coming years.

That is the trend but all 3 of LSU, Ole Miss and Alabama are/have grown.

I find these universities with constant construction projects to be so interesting because if you work in higher ed, know anyone in higher ed, or just happen to see salaries online when job searching, you know that no matter how much money the university spends, that money isn't going to staff salaries.

So you get constant turnover and low morale amongst underpaid staff, who see the latest dorm or lazy river somehow getting funded, while they're expected to go above and beyond while barely getting enough money to survive on.

It's an interesting dichotomy.

Tennessee as well. We're opening up 2,000 new beds this fall and 1,130 the next fall.

Same private partner developing this new housing at LSU, who also did the Nicholson Gateway at LSU.

This is another fine use of our tax money that has millions nationwide wanting to never pay taxes again.

This is almost $180k per student. Small houses with 3 bedrooms are $13,200 from Amazon. 300 of those to house 1200 students would be around $ million, plus the land and set up costs.

Amazon small house.

Supposedly we have entering “enrollment cliff”. Enrollments are expected to decline as fall out from 2008 Great Recession and declining births
I heard about that too

Assuming 2 students per room, that's 600 rooms. That comes out to over $358K per room. I know construction costs have risen, but that's insane. You can build a decent 3/2 house for that.

Yes that’s been the rule for a while, but a lot of upperclassmen now want to live on campus too, and there’s not enough room for everyone. All bc of how shitty the area is around LSU now
