I can't recall any of my classes being cancelled unless it was weather related.

I once played our teacher in a game of rock paper scissors over whether or not we had class that day (I won, so we did not)

Right after Katrina I had a professor who was putting her house back together, meeting with contractors, etc. and showed up to like 3 classes the entire semester. Broke down crying on exam day when she had no exam to give us. Told us all to send her an email with what we thought our grade should be for that semester.

I had a professor completely miss the final exam because he had a flat tire, and that was just way too much for him to deal with. We passed a cell phone around class, and he gave everyone their final exam grade based on how well they did in the class during the semester.

there is a troubling trend of teachers canceling classes, sometimes last minute.

Nah, your son is skipping class and telling you this when you catch him. Guessing he either lives at home or you are a helicopter parent and have one of those Life 360 aps or something similar on his phone.

It’s the new way for a lot of instructors/professors. They will post assignments online and the students are basically teaching themselves. In my son’s experience they just did it this way for the semester instead of cancelling classes.

As a former LSU professor (retired) - either your son or you should complain department head or Dean of whatever college he is in enrolled in. In most cases the profs superior will likely talk to him/her to find out what’s going on. You are absolutely correct - you and tax payers are paying for a service.

In my day, repeated absences or cancellation of classes by a prof would not have been tolerated and dealt with. And I emphasize repeated absences - sometimes shite happens - sickness, caught up in an accident driving to class (early morning classes), …. happened to me on occasion, so I’d call a secretary and ask them to go down to the classroom, tell the students what happened, and dismiss the class, and then I’d apologize to the students for my absence at the next class.

i graduated in 2022 and it was like this the whole time i was there. Those professors are entitled and think they can teach when they want to.

Unfortunately, it’s not like how it was back in the day. I wish there were more people like you in our education system. These days the department/chair will cover or defend their professors. Also, professors will tell students straight up they’re not afraid because of tenure. If you go to the Dean, they will then say, there is nothing we can do about it.

I went to college as a non traditional after the military and most of the requirements for degrees are filler classes for the school to make money on. With how accessible higher education is, it’s bullshite this is happening and rates continue to increase. The drama and pettiness these professors bring into the classrooms is also another issue that shouldn’t be happening. Just because they’re having a bad day doesn’t mean they need to take it out on their students.

OP is great caring and being involved. Most parents have no clue what is going on. Yes, the students are adults and it is their responsibility but if more people knew this was happening they probably wouldn’t save so much to send little Johnny to school.

Once you get to the 3rd and 4th year, you'll actually start taking classes the professors care about.

You’re paying for your son to get a STEM degree so he can move out of Louisiana and get better career opportunities somewhere else

in my experience, you also see this much more with teachers who are on tenure. they know they have more rope and are so much lazier

Who is teaching the class? A professor who cannot make it to class usually are going to a research conference or an illness or something like a wedding or something and they should send a graduate student to teach the class instead if they cannot make it.

When I was at LSU unless it was a sudden thing like an illness or accident a graduate student will usually cover the class.

This is such a weird take by OP, when I was in college my parents had no idea what was happening, what classes I was in and certainly never once did we discuss whether a professor showed up. What's with the babying going on everywhere?
