For these reasons, among others, the 2018 graduating class of the Paul M. Hebert Law Center deserves an apolitical and noncontroversial speaker who is reflective of the ideals of this institution and its graduates. Our students welcome and value the exchange of varying ideas. However, the speaker chosen for the commencement ceremony has proudly flaunted his anti-inclusion views and supported divisive legislation. What stands out most about Congressman Steve Scalise is his insolent attendance of, and participation in, white supremacist events during his campaign. A speaker who courts white-supremacists is highly offensive to the students that make up the graduating class.

Seem like pretty unfounded claims. This might just reflect poorly on the school.

Oh FFS.
I bet they'd be good with a socialist or communist.

Congressman Scalise has repeatedly attempted to exclude homosexual couples from the right to marry, which runs counter to the Law Center's welcoming of individuals regardless of their gender identities and sexual orientation. Additionally, Scalise has boldly refused to acknowledge the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday- displaying his blatant disrespect for racial equality.

Well, if we're strolling down hyperbole street, what about the fact that he was shot by a Bernie Bro and almost died?

Why do these people want to ban a victim of gun violence and political terrorism?

Basically, before Scalise was a Congressman, he spoke at an event 16 years ago hosted by a group headed by David Duke. Supposedly, Scalise had no idea of the connection and simply showed up because he was invited.

I am really disappointed in my fellow students who signed this petition. There are some really intelligent people whom I know personally that signed this thing. I think it is a sign of just how powerful our social media and 24 hour news culture brainwashes people that they can be so convinced that Congressman Steve Scalise, who narrowly survived an assassination attempt by a crazed gunman, is a racist monster that must be banned from speaking at his alma mater due to his terrible sins against minorities.

The man has never publicly said or done anything even remotely construable as racist, but because he unknowingly accepted an invitation to a group that Southern Poverty Law Center later listed as a hate group, he is now a monster by association. However, Barack Obama is a hero despite having sat in a radical black liberation church for decades. This double standard is absolutely insane.

Scruffy hopes this “student” didn’t support Hillary Clinton since she was mentored by an actual leader of the KKK.

The names I recognize absolutely did, and every one of them has called Donald Trump a racist in casual conversation.

Then they are clearly racists who support the KKK.

Pretty disappointing that LSU’s law center would let people like that in.

Kanye will continue Trump's vision and will finally lead the slaves to freedom from the democrat plantation. Kanye will finally realize the dreams of Abraham Lincoln and Martin Luther King Jr.

And they all watch CNN, listen to NPR, and rely on John Oliver for their nifty and snarky opinions of the week.

I'm sure it would come as no shock to you that CNN plays constant on the TV in the Law School Student Lounge
