You mean the “corporation” (LSU) is trying to squeeze every nickel? What a surprise.

The refund is individualized to their living arrangement and usage of meal plans. There is no real way to calculate what every student should get back.

You also have to factor in fees/charges incurred through the semester as well

ECA is 3980 per semester for a 4 bedroom apartment.
That's 7960 for the year. Using the 2/9 left over as per your 7/9s contention would leave a refund of 1768.89 With a 75% deduction this comes to 442. Yes they are giving this penalty.

I understand your math but neither of your amounts (refund with and without penalty) come close to the amount they are reportedly refunding. Something is weird here.

Because the amount varies. There are a lot of different housing options for various amounts. Also, what day students check out changes the exact amount that's pro rated. LSU's site has some examples based on particular assumptions. So, as students with different options check out on different days, there will be some variance in exact numbers.

eta: Also, I was just using someone else's calculation on time.

What's especially galling is if you go to LINK, and look at the FAQs at the bottom, it says there's no fee for checking out. They slipped this in hoping no one would catch it.

This sounds like a middle management decision

BS. No middle management is enforcing legal contracts. This is from up high in the university.

that is going get crushed by the Board of Directors.

Might get shot down by the Board of Supervisors, because JBE isn't going to want this horrific look.

they are now assessing a 75% penalty for breaking the contract. Instead of a $2,000 refund, students will now receive about $500.

There's no 75% penalty. The $538 refund is for the 25% remaining of the academic calendar from 3/18 onward

I was wondering when someone in this thread would have a brain in their head.

It’s called a force majeure. LSU is not on solid legal footing.

Nope. Move in day was Jan 11. Last day is May 9. March 10 is half. March 15 is 65 out of 120 days or 54 percent.

Days not used are 55 or 46 percent.

The checkout date is March 18th, not the 15th.

Minor difference, just a heads up when doing calculations.

Thanks - then 52 days early or 43.3 percent of the 120.

East campus apartments varies from 3980-4940 a semester
west campus from 3980-4335
nicholson gateway 4495-7290
acadian 3520
annie boyd 4115
cedar 4235
miller 3330-3725
mcvoy 3030
herget 2870-3030
pentagon 3030

then there's the residential colleges that range from 3490-4245

This sure seems like quite a bit of variance, especially when you start accounting for different days of checking out that results in different pro-ratings.
