A Louisiana State trooper injured last week when a Hammond police vehicle hit him during a car chase in Hammond has died, officials said.
The trooper is identified as George Baker, according to a statement from Louisiana State Police.
quote:
Hammond Police Department officer noticed a suspicious vehicle in a parking lot in the 2700 block of West Thomas Street just after 2 a.m. Wednesday, according to a Hammond police news release.
When the officer tried to conduct a traffic stop, the driver took off at a high rate of speed and the officer saw occupants throwing items out of the vehicle.
Multiple Hammond police officers joined the pursuit and, as it moved out of city limits, additional agencies joined, according to the release.
Louisiana State Police said their troopers were sent around 2:15 a.m. to help the Hammond Police Department.
The troopers put a tire deflation device on Wardline Road near the intersection with Kate Street, police said. The device flattened the tires of the vehicle authorities were chasing.

When the troopers were getting the device from the road, a Hammond police unit involved in the chase hit two troopers. The troopers were taken via Acadian Ambulance to North Oaks Medical Center, police said.
Hammond police have arrested Taylor Cox, 26, of Hammond and Nathan Anding, 18.
He was a Marine and a dedicated public servant. Godspeed.

And just like that you catch a manslaughter case.

Not one white person will make up any excuses for them, or defend them in any way. Because we believe in consequences. Throw the damn book at them and send em away.

They'll be "catching" more than manslaughter.

They will be catching more than pitching where they are going.

So other cops killed this trooper? And one of them was 18??

ironic that just a week or so ago on Live PD the guys were discussing just how dangerous it is to be the officer setting the stop sticks during police chases... and then this happens
RIP Tpr. Baker

Well, yeah ... But I was referring to what the driver will be charged with. I expect it'll be a murder charge. Maybe it'll get reduced in a plea bargain, but they take killing a cop, even if indirectly, very seriously.

Damn that is tough. LEO killing one of their own. Circumstances be damned the cop who hit that trooper probably feels like he shot a hostage.
Any police on here care to chime in. Not the blame game just a question. This could have had zero to do with this accident. The technology cops are using now while driving in pursuit speeds is insane. Phone, laptop, and shoulder radio. All while possibly going 100 mph. Are there any advances being made in equipment that frees up a guy to just drive?
Or is the only answer 2 guys in a car? One could be running that shite while another drives?
I’m really just asking because I saw it on Live PD last night. Cop was driving to assist something. He had his phone in hand. Tossed it on his dash I believe. And when the camera cut to front view he was hauling arse. If I feel a sneeze coming on while in traffic my arse puckers knowing my eyes are gonna close for a second. Can’t imagine the pucker factor of all that equipment, calling a chase, and driving balls out.

The occupants of the car were 18 and 26. I don't know who was driving. The trooper was run over while trying to remove a spike strip by a Hammond cop.

It isn’t indirect in the eyes of the law. Anyone killed in the commission of a felony is 100% all on you. The fact that it’s a cop is not going to help their chances at a plea.

I'm not a cop but from my limited knowledge of it they have one car who's job it is to "call" the chase while the other units are freed up to just pursue. Of course, if there is a helicopter, they will call the chase. But the first unit to get in on the chase is definitely on his own until other units can jump in. And like you said, it would be the passenger who would call the chase but lots of departments don't ride double. In fact, I've never been pulled over by anything other than a single unit.
And you're right, the guy that hit him is probably ready to take himself out right now. I'm sure he is being watched very closely by family and friends. Terrible situation all the way around.

Yep. It’s felony murder, and this is basically a textbook scenario.

It’s felony murder, but what circumstances allowed a traffic stop on a “suspicious vehicle”? It takes more than that to flip on the lights.
