Louisville is a fun city stay in the East End or if downtown by 4th Street area. Brown Hotel, C21 etc. The area by the Derby like most areas by horse tracks is a dump but L-ville in general is a nice city with some good Restuarants etc.

I met that Italian mob boss Louisville basketball coach who I think is now at St. Johns in an elevator at the galt house hotel. At first I didn’t know who it was until we got off the elevator and people started huddling around him asking questions.

I'm going to throw Oklahoma in for the armpit award.
Oklahoma is no paradise, but we don't have dense concentrations of dumpiness.
The worst parts of Tulsa, Lawton and Oklahoma City pale in comparison to East St. Louis, Memphis, and most of NOLA.

80mph speed limit on their highways is awesome.
You have to pay to drive on those, and there are not that many places where you can do that.

and the food scene is good (not like N.O. but no place has restaurants like that).
It's better than BR, that is for sure. The food, culture and city as a whole, for that matter.

chime in. Was in Lexington last week. For the amount of rich women around, there really weren’t very many attractive women.
Is Lexington known for having rich women or something?

Go to Keeneland, probably my favorite race track. You can go during the Fall or Spring Meets and have a blast, without entering the grounds. Just go park on the Hill Lot, enjoy some Bluegrass and watch the simulcast on outdoor big screen. No Riff Raff in sight.

Downtown Louisville and the area around Churchill Downs are nothing special. Pretty sketchy. But the NuLu area, the Highlands, etc. are great. E Market St and Baxter Ave/Bardstown Rd. Cool stuff. I’ve always had a good time in Louisville.

Have you been to West Memphis lately?

There’s no nightlife and the local restaurants are ok.
Agreed on the nightlife (the Highlands isn’t what it used to be for that and 4th Street remains tourist trap). But disagree on the food.
If you like Wild Eggs highly recommend trying Con Huevos, Gralehaus, Highland Mourning (one of the original owners of Wild Eggs).

No, but I was at Keenland in the club level and then went to Jeff Ruby steakhouse after one of the bigger races of the year. Lots of money around, not many attractive women.

So bad that I literally blocked it out of my memory until now.
Honorable mention for armpit of America goes to Port Arthur.

Well then New Orleans is the taint

Went through Port Arthur on a work trip a few years ago.
Outbound part of trip -- saw a guy hanging out at a convenience store next to the entrance area.
Coming back a few days later....same guy in the exact same spot.
I was thinking: Is there anything here but liquor stores, a convenience store and some houses? Do there have a hospital or school?

There’s your problem. You’re staying 20 miles south of Louisville in the cookie cutter sections.

I hate UofL, but I have always enjoyed Louisville as a place.
Best Italian restaurant I have ever encountered is in Louisville.

I traveled for work to Louisville in early 2006, and it was among my favorite cities that I worked in. Easy walking distance to everything downtown. Nice baseball park, Fraser Arms Museum, Louisville Slugger factory. I drove to the Woodford Reserve distillery and Fort Knox (and the armor museum that was there at the time).
That said, they had one of the worst homeless/junkie/drunk problems of any city I visited, including major cities like NYC and LA. Couldn’t walk a couple blocks without a beggar asking for cash.
