Here comes the lowering of the hiring standards

quote:

After Mississippi, Louisiana has the country's second-highest proportion of African-American residents, at 32 percent, but blacks make up just 16 percent of the 1,063 commissioned State Police troopers, according to state figures.

The agency also falls far below the national average of female representation in law enforcement, with women making up a paltry 4 percent of state troopers.

quote:

"It's hard to police when your department is not reflective of your surroundings," said a veteran black trooper who spoke to The Advocate on the condition of anonymity. "I never thought that, in 2018, we'd still have a culture of minorities not having a voice or being able to speak out about diversity issues without being blackballed."

Reeves denies that race or gender has factored into hiring or promotions since he took the helm of the agency in March 2017. He succeeded Edmonson amid a series of scandals engulfing State Police, including one involving a group of troopers who charged taxpayers for a so-called "side trip" they took to Las Vegas and the Grand Canyon while driving to a conference in California.

quote:

Landry said a confluence of factors tend to hobble the recruiting of minorities, including some that are unique to State Police. For one, he said, State Police historically have had little presence in inner cities, which contain the highest concentrations of potential minority recruits.

"You compound that with some of the poor relationships between the African-American communities and the police, and it makes it difficult to recruit someone," he said. "We did everything humanly possible, sending troopers to schools and inner cities. We believed every trooper should have been a recruiter."

Recruiting women also has been a problem, and a number of female troopers have sued the agency over the years alleging sexual harassment and discrimination. One of them, Genny May, a former U.S. marshal who became the highest-ranking woman ever to serve in the State Police, claimed a decade ago that she had been wrongly denied promotions throughout her career due to the agency's "systemic exclusion" of women.

Maybe we just just have seperate but equal police forces. The white cops ticket and arrest white folks and so forth. Would that please everyone?

Why does policing all of a sudden become any different when you change the populace? You arrest people for crimes. Pretty cut and dry

There is always a tough recruitment process to pass to even get into the state police.

It’s most likely, just like any of the city and parish departments where lots of black folks just aren’t applying to be officers

this. I’ve got a young black guy that’s works for me that I’ve tried to get to sign up. He’s very intelligent and honorable young man but he will not apply because of his family and friends would disown him to an extent

Sad truth is in Louisiana try and find Qualified Black people with no criminal record and do not use any drugs.....that are willing to be cops.

How are L.E. agencies supposed to hire black officers when people teach young black men and women to hate the police.

Well, the "community leaders" say all cops are racist murderers and black cops are race traitors. Then they turn around and demand that more blacks should be police.

Not really applicable to a state police, but if I were a police chief, I would hire as many black cops as I could. The reason being, is that I would allow those cops quite the latitude in allowing them to enforce the laws.
This way the "community" should feel less "oppressed", yet would still have the proper protection, etc.

From the article:

quote:

Black employees had been "largely ignored" for decades at State Police, the writer added, and were less likely to be promoted than their white counterparts.

Yet 3 of the last 5 Colonels have been black along with numerous other high ranking positions (Majors and Lt. Colonels)

I'm sure Terry Landry, Henry Whitehorn, and Murphy Paul was all about giving white troopers preferential treatment.

Recruiting women also has been a problem,

Absolutely.

It’s hard to find females that are comfortable with the idea of fighting a suspect on the shoulder of the highway at 2 am by yourself with your closest backup 5-20 minutes away.

From the article...

Only 0.8% of LSP are Asian.

The most forgotten about minority...
