3.0 with a 23 should do the trick. Wasn't the average like a 19? It will be fair on all fronts. 20 is too low.

Ah now I get it. Your an idiot.

TOPS isn't a welfare program it is supposed to be a reward for hard work in school and to help keep our state's brightest minds in state.

There are other grants and scholarships for low income impoverished people

You did not read the article that I linked. Most of the people receiving TOPS money are well-off, and don't need the assistance - That means that they should be paying for their own tuition in the first place (which is how it was before.) They will still go to LSU, and that way the State is no longer paying for it. This, deep-thinker, reduces the the overall outlay that Louisiana's budget has been paying for.

I read the title of the article, and it says that most of TOPS benefits go to white kids. I already knew that, so I didn't need to read the article.

Exactly. They can go wherever they want. The state wants them to stay. By eliminating the scholarship, you are effectively raising the price of tuition for the best performing HS students in the state, which makes alternative options more attractive.

They will still go to LSU

How do you know this?

You do know that LSU is not the only school that uses scholarships, right? Can you serioulsy not see that your plan would risk dumbing down the student population (by lowering admission standards) which would make current budget projections less meaningful? You would have a different group of customers, with different needs and costs.

Eliminating TOPS,

how about you raise the requirements so that not everyone gets it. They have the same thing in GA, but the required GPA is closer to a 3.5 rather than a 2.5.

You think someone that makes a 20 on their ACT and a 2.5 GPA in HS is considered the brightest??

What I mean by, "don't need it", is that most of the beneficiaries are wealthy. See the article, which refers to a study of the program.
Excuse me? Wealthy? Middle class, working people are "wealthy" now?

I think it is called STAR, and met a kid from GA when I was a FR that came to LSU bc it was cheaper since he didnt qualify for STAR.

Why don't we try Eliminating the undeserving people on welfare first and then see where we're at
BEST idea I have read all day, but what in the hell did LA expect with this new governor?
Budget cuts will surely not be aimed at the entitled takers.

Luckily my daughter is about to go to college with the aid of a scholarship, because of HARD WORK.

Well common sense would lead me to believe that parents that push their kids to achieve to a TOPS standard are likely college grads themselves and thus at least middle class families. That doesn't make them wealthy, just parents with good priorities.

The 2.5 was used when they changed to core GPA. I think most people would be fine with raising the core GPA requirement to a 3.0 or better.

If you read my previous post you will see that I stated the requirements are too low and are rewarding g average students and should be raised

You are literally to dumb to insult. First of all, that is one of the biggest race-baiting articles I've ever seen. Want to know why more white people get TOPS? Because they EARN it while they are in high school. TOPS does not look at the color of the persons skin when deciding if they should receive the scholarship or not. Instead, TOPS looks at the achievements of that student. What should be done with TOPS is raising the requirements to receive the scholarship. TOPS wasn't designed for everyone to go to college. It was designed for those who work hard and are the smartest in the state to have incentive to go to in state schools. TOPS shouldn't be so easy to get coming out of high school. College isn't for everyone, TOPS shouldn't be either. It should only be for those individuals who have earned it regardless of their skin color and their parents socio-economic standing.

brightest, a superlative, indicates there is a basis of comparison. I'm not even sure those scores would get you into LSU at all anymore. TOPS is also there for students at the lower end of the qualification range, as an incentive to actually go to college at a different in-state school.

Current LSU tuition and fees is about 4800 per semester. Current students with TOPS pay about 1400. Removing TOPS will cost students an additional 3,400 per semester.
