A couple of morning updates from Mikulas too

quote:

Meteorologist Nick Mikulas
My thermometer, along with the thermometers at the airport, and Esler field, currently show 33 degrees. Fort Polk is reporting 32. Remember, temperatures don’t move in whole degrees, so it might be 32.3, or 31.9 at Fort Polk. With how wet we already are, and how close we are to the actual freezing point, I’m not thinking we see any major road problems this morning, but I’ll be watching for any signs of a problem on bridges and overpasses. I think there may be some patches of freezing rain, but this would mainly put a little, brief layer of ice on elevated surfaces. Just be aware of the small potential, and if the person in front of you spins out, realize that it got a little colder than I thought, and slowly let off the gas and pump those brakes. I’ll update this whole crazy winter saga, later this morning.

It’s now 32 at the airport, and Esler field. So we are probably seeing a little ice, at least up in the trees as this heavy drizzle and light rain continues. I just did a quick bridge test through Pineville, and as of now, it was all just wet. My car thermometer, which isn’t perfect, is now down to 30. So be careful this morning. We should “warm” to around 35 this afternoon.

The biggest problem we have for Sunday and Monday is how cold it already is. Surfaces will be more than cold enough for accumulation with little melting. The cold temps today and Saturday are prepping surfaces for major ice build up.

You're talking about areas north and west of Baton Rouge, right?

KEEL 710 in Shreveport

KEEL following the Euro model I think. Calling for 4-6" Sunday-Monday followed by 3-5" Tuesday-Wednesday.

My uncle in Trout LA has some icing on his truck in the driveway. Was freezing rain supposed to fall this early in the forecast?

We might have gotten a little last night but it was mostly rain. It was mostly rain last night but the temperatures got cold enough to where we had some slow freezing on surfaces through the night. Not so much actual freezing rain where the water freezes on contact.

Should I be worried about my water lines in the attic connecting to my hot water heater freezing up? Home is in Shreveport

Will you be living in the house during the cold snap? If so, it is likely nothing to worry about, as long as you maintain electricity and continue using water as you normally do. Heat rises, and as long as you're heating your home in some way, it will continue to rise. The normal flow of water in the pipes also helps. It takes much colder temps to freeze moving water, which is why dripping your faucets is often recommended. If it worries you, partially open your attic access to allow heat in easier.

Also, if you can find one today, the small oil-filled space heaters that look like radiators are handy to have. You can put one just about anywhere, set it on low, and let it do its thing. I've used them regularly over the years in laundry rooms and such. They are the safest of the space heaters.

Everything I'm saying hinges on not losing power. You will need to take other action if that happens.

There seems to be a more serious ice threat from the second instance later in the week for La than even the first. The last run of the GFS looked a bit concerning.

The 12z ICON brings the arctic air further south and brings colder air into S La. Runs about 5 degrees cooler at the lowest temps Tuesday morning.

Many of us never leave the 20s

The cold air is hanging around a while, and we have sytem after system lining up, moving west to east across the country. There will be plenty cold and plenty of moisture that any precipitation can be wintry until the cold air moves out.
