the builder put the damned water heaters in the attic and the lines froze in the attic anyway.

This is extremely common.

Ouch let's hope that doesn't end up being correct.

That is one of the most honest and level headed responses from a local meteorologist I’ve ever read.

That is what you get in Cenla. We have great weathermen. You want to know what street a tornado is coming down then Tom Konvicka is your man. That dude tells you to seek cover, you get in a closet.

This dude nailed it

We aren’t there yet. We are just in watch and see mode. So don’t mob the grocery stores for milk and toilet paper just yet.

quote:

I won’t exhibit anything resembling confidence this far out, but I will say that the model signal, and my own personal feeling about this system is pretty much as high confidence as it gets 5 days out. What does that mean? It’s tough to put a number on it, but as of now, I’d say I’m 40% confident of us seeing an impactful winter storm over at least half of the area next Monday into Monday night. That’s just me trying to plop a number on it. To me, that’s a huge number this far out. To you, you’re probably like, “that’s it?”.

quote:

So let’s not act like we truly know what will happen here. The specifics won’t be close to evident for a few more days

quote:

I’ll update things daily, or if I see something really interesting. I’m not attaching images, because no one model captures the uncertainty, and I’m too old to figure out how to make a nice clean graphic myself. Plus I just typed all these words, so it’s time for another coffee.

If it’s an electric water heater be sure to turn breaker off before you drain it, otherwise heating element will burn out. Assuming there’s power. Best to turn breaker off anyway because when power is restored tank will still be empty.

Probably a safe bet to go ahead and buy some pipe insulation at the hardware store before it gets wild. I have a brand new DSLD home (first house) and nervous about how to prep it.

People familiar with exposed copper pipes and water heaters in attics - if I have an attic entry inside my home, would it provide any benefit to open the door to allow warmer home air to rise into the attic during this event? I don't really mind my home heater running extra for a 24 hour period if it will help prevent issues

That’s odd. Mine is just the opposite. Where are you located?

Amd my Weather Underground caught up. Both now calling for about 1” of frozen precipitation Monday night.

I have no idea the answer to your question, but it is blowing my mind that builders put water heaters in attics. I have never heard of such. Shocked that insurance carriers would even write policies for a house with a water heater in the attic.

Again - these products are computerized outcomes based on a combination of model runs. These are not forecasts!

Your attic should be heated enough from the living area beneath it so that your pipes don't freeze. As long as you have electricity.

The only two houses I've owned have them there. One built in 2002, one in 2018.

It's the first I've heard of it too.

That said, I wonder if it has to do with the nature of living in an area that is prone to flooding.

Maybe it is a Louisiana thing? I've never seen a house without one in the attic.

even the weather.gov point forecasts are based on their grids. They're not written by meteorologists. The AFD and other products are.
