It's showing a low of 4 in BR Tuesday morning

Spent a week in NYC a few years ago while they were having an event like this. Couple days of single digit lows, couple days in the low teens. That kind of cold is hard to describe to people like me who rarely, if ever, experience it

The Ice Storm Warning line here in Kentucky just keeps shifting further north. It's now just outside of my county. And it's already slicker than shite here from the freezing rain all day.

What do you mean keep toilets running? Keep flushing it all night over and over?

Shut off water to toilet. Flush and let water drain out of tank. Prop valve open. Turn water back on at a slow trickle.

If it's 5 degrees it's not raining. Maybe rain/sleet but not raining and even higher likelihood it's snowing. Those are really low temps obviously.

I've lived in Alaska and in Omaha. There was never a time while I lived there that something other than snow fell at 5 degrees

It was probably 15ish years ago when me and a friend went to Jackson, TN to see his family for an early Christmas get together. It was cold all three days we were there, around 11° one night. I needed to buy my Pops something for Christmas, and my friend needed to get some Craftsman tool he got from his dad replaced. So, we went to Sears at the mall. It was so damn cold that our dumb asses decided to leave the truck running with the heat on and just lock the doors. Well, we went in and I bought a belt sander for my Pops, and be handled what he needed to do. We came out of the store, only for him to realize he took the wrong damn key off the keyring! Fortunately, his truck had the sliding back glass. We started in on it, our fingers numb, and noses running. It took about 30 minutes, but we got the damn thing prised open. I, being the smaller of the two of us, had to go in the window head first and stretch to unlock the door. I got it, nearly broke my neck, but I got it.

That was one of the dumber things I've been part of, and I'm not proud of it. Still, we went duck hunting the next morning, though.

When it is only below freezing 1,000 feet above the surface, it won’t have time to freeze until hitting the ground. And it’s not going to be 5 degrees when it’s falling. It’s going to be 5 after the ground is covered in ice and evaporational cooling starts.

I've been following this thread closely for the last week. I've been telling my wife and family what this thread is saying...all they do is look at the weather app on their phones that say sat - mon will be highs in the 50s and lows in the high 20s...and they don't take me seriously.

When will all of the models be consistent with each other so we can get serious about planning to make sure that we have everything that we need? They are laughing me off right now.

If these below 15 degree temps pan out I think I am going to turn off water main (and water heater as well) and drain pipes and water heater. I’ll just have some buckets of water drawn up to flush toilets. My house is not on a slab. Y’all think this sounds like a good precaution to take? I already have a couple of small plumbing issues I’ve been postponing having worked on and don’t need a bigger plumber bill. And even running a generator with just some space heaters, I don’t think would keep every pipe from freezing in temps like that.

So we know Jay Grimes is picking this winter event hill to defend/die on...when will Dr Eachus weigh in with his smugness?

The baffling thing with this entire situation is that the models ARE consistent. Very consistent. The only model NOT showing this is the EURO and I believe that's why local meteorologists aren't sounding the alarm quite yet.

They're either going to ride their own ego into irrelevancy or will have to cave in the next couple days and start mentioning the very real possibility of an ice storm for the history books across most of Louisiana.

They're going to compete with each other to see who can ignore 99% of the models the most.
