LA has some nice things about it, however they have so many bad things about it. I doubt that ever changes.

Maine being in the top 5 is surprising. From what I've seen in my one visit through that state, and heard, is that it's surprisingly poor and methy. Small population though, so perhaps the more wealthy folks in Portland are enough to pull it up.

5 states with the lowest net worth

1. West Virginia: $96,740
West Virginia is the state with the fifth-lowest median net worth at $96,740. The average DTI in West Virginia is just under 1.2, and the average salary is $52,200. The average property value is $167,589, which is less than half the national average.

2. Arkansas: $93,480
In Arkansas, the median net worth is $93,480 — less than half the national average. The average DTI is 1.2, and the average salary is $51,250. Property values in Arkansas are slightly higher than West Virginia at $210,633.

3. Alabama: $90,200
In Alabama, the median net worth is $90,200 — also less than half the national average. The average DTI in Alabama is over 1.3, and the average salary is $53,400. Despite having lower average salaries and higher levels of debt, homeowners in Alabama are at a slight advantage compared to the previous two states because the average property value is $228,669.

4. Mississippi: $82,440
Mississippi has a median net worth of $82,440. Residents have an average DTI of 1.4, while the average salary is on the lower end at $47,570. Property values in Mississippi are some of the lowest in the country at $181,232, on average.

5. Louisiana: $71,900
The state with the lowest net worth is Louisiana, with a median net worth of $71,900. The average salary in Louisiana is $53,440, and the average DTI is 1.3. On the bright side, property values in Louisiana are up 0.4% year over year, with the average property value sitting at $201,100.

Least surprising thing you will see all day.

Great hunting and fishing though.

No surprise that the bottom 5 states have been dominated by Republicans for decades.

At what point do poor states try something new and vote them out?

Not saying Louisiana is awesome and an underrated gem but I strongly disagree on Alabama and Arkansas. Those two states definitely have pleasant pockets to live in. Both have booming growth going on. Especially Huntsville and Fayetteville.

Northwest Arkansas is spectacular and anyone who’s actually been there knows.

Northern Alabama is very nice and is being modernized rapidly. Then there’s also spots in South Alabama like Fairhope and Dothan that are desirable as well.

These “lists” are made by northeastern elitists who look down their noses at anything in the Deep South.

4 of the bottom five states have more of something than any other state. Care to take a shot at what that is?

And we have what? The most O&G in the entire country, along with Texas and Alaska? It’s a complete shame that we have such poverty in such a rich natural resource state. We’re like Africa of the US. Rich in resources, yet very poor, and discombobulated.

Everyone that works in the associated industries is not living in poverty. The employment and industry around the natural resources has resulted in very high paying jobs for individuals in this state.

The discombobulation stems from people voting for Huey P. Long era economic and judicial policies because they “Want to support the little man”.

Not surprising one bit.

Just live there for a little while and youll see why. This has nothing to do with color but education.

When I was riding to work this morning behind yet another car with a temp tag, on 4 donut spares and reeking of the skunkiest weed on planet earth, this is not surprising.

I can't even imagine where this state will be in a decade. I assume that half the cars on the road will not be insured (nor even be registered to whomever is driving it) but will all be primed and ready to call a personal injury attorney at any whim.
