This would actually be a good idea if it was for all boats $20k or more. Of course nothing is ever done for us common folk though.

Now days 200k will barely get you a bay boat

Tax breaks for rich buddies and drugged out tigers and failed Bible laws for the middle class and working folks.
Who coulda seen it comin'?

The damage that can be done. St Petersburg, Fl had big Yacht building industry. So big the builders could tell a buyer to go to hell, then pick up the phone and tell number one on the waiting list they a boat ready.
Clinton put in a luxury tax. The entire industry moved to Burmuda. Most of the employees moved too. Man, I miss the test runs on those Gulf Stream Yachts.

Guidry said he owns nine fishing and pleasure boats, including three yachts he estimated are worth a combined $50 million.
About 13 years ago, I handled the purchase of some real estate for the family. Besides being extremely pleasant to work with, what I remember the most is how efficient and effective they managed their time.
I've had the opportunity to meet and work with some wealthy people in my life, but their wealth is on a totally different scale.

I get the visceral reaction, but how exactly does this personally benefit Guidry? By allowing him to register his boats (that he runs in Louisiana) in Louisiana as opposed to Florida (where he currently registers them)? The concept seems clear to me - poach that revenue from Florida and other states with more reasonable taxes. If Louisiana were already competitive with other states, Guidry would have paid $180k in taxes on his 9 boats to Louisiana instead of to other states.
Boat owners don't give a shite where they register their boats as long as they're legal and guys who can buy big boats are smart enough to register them in the places where it makes the most financial sense.
I do think an across the board reduction on boat registration is warranted and sales tax on used boats should be done away with.

People don’t disagree with the action. In fact, I bet most support it.
But limiting tax on boats over $200k is not the most pressing issue this state has and seems pointedly aimed at helping out his friends more so than the state.
Had he announced a reduction or elimination in sales tax on all boats over $10k, it would do much more for the every day man instead of the ultra wealthy and connected.

This is my main problem with him. He's a self-serving, egotistical, a-hole. Anything postive that comes from his time in office will be an accidental byproduct of something he was doing to help his friends or showcase himself as Cajun Trump.

There are rumors of Cassidy running, but you have to think Graves is licking him chops.

Is there any way that this benefits Louisiana?
We will have more expensive boats registered in the state? Is that a benefit?

Well in theory, you’re going to get a bunch of $20k sales tax payments. Plus the gas that’s sold, plus the other operating costs of having the boat registered and docked in the state.
Probably bullshite, but that’s the theory
