Is this maybe something that has been around already and now that we are testing we see it?
I work overseas and in late Jan there was a bug going around that was kicking asses and taking names, several of us that rarely get sick got hit hard.
Discussion at lunch yesterday was did we already catch it and recover.
Entire group was between 30 and 45 and in relativly good health.
who knows at this point

You are talking about Medicaid. Big difference. Sorry Bernie.
“Some of it. Nursing homes are ruthless.
Medicare makes you use all your available resources before reimbursement to the facility. They will review several years of financial records to make sure you didn’t pass off money knowing you need a nursing home in the immediate future. The facilities themselves are very expensive (think $10k/month for a couple at a decent facility); they run you dry then Medicare starts making payments for a much lower level of care.
If you have elderly parents for close family members, get their affairs in order and buy la long term care policy.

The ones that are remotely affordable aren't that great.

I had something before christmas that lasted about a week. Sore throat for 24 hours followed by a cough and extreme fatigue. No upper respiratory involvement. The cough wasn't a dry cough though.

I have had the misfortune of having visited some of the nursing homes for the poor people who worked their entire lives until they were physically unable. Some are like insane asylums. People screaming and crying. The stares on their faces hoping that someone just walked in to visit them. Take a little time in your life to see how the old are treated after they lose their usefulness.

I think you mean Medicaid

Our entrance fees begin at $275,000 and monthly fees begin at $3,971.
Isn’t St. James Place more expensive than that ?

Bingo! Sounds like you had it. My family got it last year before everyone made a big deal about it. We all recovered. Never even went to a doctor.

Just got an email from my father's nursing home that not even family members can come in to visit "until further notice".

Just to clarify, MediCARE is federally provided health insurance for those over 65. It does not pay for nursing home care. MediCAID is what you're describing. Medicaid is a state-run, federal match health program for the poor.
It's MediCAID that requires you "spin down" your assets to a poverty level in order to qualify for Medicaid which pays for nursing home care.
MediCARE and most commercial insurance doesn't cover nursing home care. Medicare does, however, pay for Skilled Nursing Care that is often provided in nursing homes. Skilled Nursing Care is time-limited to 100 days and requires daily therapy (PT,OT and/or Speech) in addition to nursing.
And, you're right: BUY LONG TERM CARE INSURANCE!

Are you really old money if you are in a nursing home?
If the facility doesn’t accept Medicaid, then its all private pay, which means $4000 a month or more. Most can’t afford that, unless they have a long term care policy, and most people that carry such policies do so because they have assets they want to protect.

“A lot of us went straight to the phone and ordered liquor,” Poe said. “If we’re going to be holed up in our room, keep us happy. The liquor store knows all about the Lambeth people.”
Screw sitting around a big, lonely house with a bunch of nurses slowly stealing your shite. This people know how to live.

11 positives at the Lambeth house now. Full lockdown. Others have flu like symptoms but aren't being tested as they haven't met whatever threshold body temp to get the test. No one going in or out.

I feel for the staff as they’re in Adult Residential Care HELL right now. I toured the community a couple years ago while in town for a conference. Multi story communities are a logistical nightmare and Memory Care residents are impossible to direct to the point of keeping distance from each other.
Not a good situation at all.

Haven’t been told that we have any cases at the nursing home where I work. But I am not “essential” so I have to work from home.
77 long term beds and 23 snf/rehab beds in a new wing. 3 of the 77 are private pay.

I’m ARCP-3 with 100 beds. The extent to which we had to explain today to families the measures being taken are to protect their loved ones was discouraging. We’re all in for a rough couple weeks.
Good luck to you.

As I mentioned in another thread, a guy was in the office today bitching that he can't waltz into his mom's nursing home and visit her whenever he wants. He's also a state district judge who's disregarding the state supreme court's instruction to suspend nonessential operations in his judicial district.
