Here's a good site from StatNews that shows the curves in every country, every state, every county/parish. I live in New Orleans but am working in Galveston...you compare those two curves and its scary

Just to clarify, MediCARE is federally provided health insurance for those over 65. It does not pay for nursing home care. MediCAID is what you're describing. Medicaid is a state-run, federal match health program for the poor.

It's MediCAID that requires you "spin down" your assets to a poverty level in order to qualify for Medicaid which pays for nursing home care.

MediCARE and most commercial insurance doesn't cover nursing home care. Medicare does, however, pay for Skilled Nursing Care that is often provided in nursing homes. Skilled Nursing Care is time-limited to 100 days and requires daily therapy (PT,OT and/or Speech) in addition to nursing.

And, you're right: BUY LONG TERM CARE INSURANCE!
