Call him from a blocked number and thank him. If he asks about any reward, just tell him you wish you could but can't afford to because all your cash was stolen out the wallet

The way I see it, he earned the $80.

But him asking for more money and giving you his name is absurd.

A few years ago, I was driving my son to school and found a wallet in the road. I found the drivers license and realized it was for a neighbor that I had never met.

I drove to his house right away and knocked on the door and there was no answer. Not wanting to be late for work and school, I just took the wallet with me and as soon as I got to the office, I googled his name and got his phone number.

I called and left a detailed message and told him he could pick it up or I will deliver it to him when I got home from work. He called me a few minutes later and seemed irritated that I had his wallet. He drove to my office and I handed him the wallet and he got back in his car and left, without one bit of gratitude.

People are strange.

Upvoting the childish and immature comments on here because with the amount of time you spend on this website you really should know better than to ask for legitimate advice.

I wouldn't say that is a for sure thing. When most people who want to rob a lost wallet do so, they take the cash out and toss the rest of the wallet. It's an easy few bucks with a low probability of prison time. Then taking that wallet and brining it to the owner would be an incredibly dumb thing to do. I'm not saying it isn't possible - but it is more likely he found the wallet *after* someone else had already taken the cash and tossed it.

I had the same thing happen to me once. The lady brought it in person and did ask for a reward. I had no cash. I wrote her a check to cash for 25 bucks. Then her husband came back a few days later with the check wanting to exchange it to cash because they said they could not cash it. So I had the cash, exchanged it for the check. Then he came back *again* the next day wanting to know if he could bum 5 bucks. I explained that I had already paid the reward I agreed to pay to his wife and that he wasn't getting anything else out of me. I never saw either of them again.

EDIT- I would recommend investing in one of these: LINK

If you had this in your wallet, you probably would have least been able to figure out where you lost it - and maybe even been able to track down it's location. With that information, you could query the person returning it to see if maybe they aren't telling the whole truth.

Tell him he can have the $80 left in the wallet, based on his response, we will know the next step

Also, are the saddle bags leather?

he should say the $200 in his wallet and see if the guy says it was only $80

even so I would rather lose $80 than have to go get new DL and new cards, etc...its worth it

I can understand appreciation for having to avoid getting a new DL, but I definitely would still cancel the cards regardless.

No telling how many people may have gone through the wallet and got the card numbers.
