I just saw THIS VIDEO of this new invention on how to extract your honey and maintain your hive. I was wondering how hard is it to start up in terms of getting bees, etc? Seems like $699 for this system is a good deal. I've been doing some research, but the only thing I'm a little unclear on is how the brood is maintained. Do you need a double brood or is a single enough? Can anyone please shed some light on this? I know it matters geographically and I'll be living in the Austin, TX area in the near future. Thanks

Sen. Rubio is proposing a honeybee tax credit so this is a great skill to get involved in!

i have two hives
everything you need to know can be found at brushy mountain

LINK

you will also need to so two things

1) find a beekeeping org in your area
2) from them, find out who is selling bees

you'll bring your hive box to the keeper who will dump a "nuc" colony in your box, with their queen

good luck!

that's a pretty neat system there. I love the hill county Texas honey with all the wildflowers that grow there.

Contact you county extension agent and find what beekeeping club is in your area and contact them about meeting dates. They will have some excellent meetings and offer great support.

I took introductory beekeeping classes through our local club and and was able to meet some great people who helped us get set with our hive boxes, bees and various supplies.

Wife and I got our 2 hives last spring and have not attempted to harvest any honey the first year. Our club has monthly meetings and members are very helpful.

Agree with finding a local club as they will know the specifics on state and local requirements.

In Louisiana, there are restrictions on how close to your property line the hive can be placed without a 10' fence (to make the bees fly at a minimum height when they cross into your neighbor's yard). Also in Louisiana, the hive has to be registered with the Department of Agriculture.

Sounds like a good hobby. Enjoy and good luck.

Have a friend who has been doing this for years. I'll text him and get an answer back for you.

This is what he said: Small colonies are good with one deep. Once a colony takes off and fills the first box give them a second.

As others have said, Find a support group and or a friend for advice / assistance.
Be prepared for failure & colony death. Beekeeping seems to have more failure than successes. Plus, it is a lot of money to just kill bees. Packages of bees go for about $100 a pop, and a Nuc for even more. That's not including hardware.

But the honey you've already extracted can stay, tax free.

Find a local apiary or beekeeper club. They will happily show you the ropes. Check with local ordinances about keeping bees in residential areas if that's your plan.

I work with lots of local beekeepers in my area to supply honey for mead making. Ive learned a lot more goes into it than you'd think. Monitoring the health of the hives and preparing them for fall/winter is a lot of work. Losing all the bees after a local farmer uses pesticide is an ever present danger too.

Don't buy that hive. I might buy the frames and modify a super to use with a regular super. That's too expensive. You are not going to be able to open up the back of the hive and drain the hive of honey out in the back yard. You would be swarmed by robber bees.

If you want to get into beekeeping get a hive and find beekeeper or beekeeping club that can mentor you.

I used to have as many as 10 hives and they are a lot of work. It's fun but work.

You can buy beau coup honey for 699 bucks.

My favorite bee supplier is Walter T Kelley LINK
