I've been living here in country for about 4 months now. I'm about to finish up a test/cert that's been taking up most of my free time.

I'll be here for 3 and a half more years so I want to learn to speak Deutsch. As of now I can only have very minimal interaction (Hello, Goodbye, Excuse me, thank you, etc.) without the aid of Google Translate.

What programs/methods have you used to successfully learn a new language? I've looked at reviews for several programs but I feel like each one of them is knocking the other in hopes of selling me on theirs.

OT, what ya got?

Danke.

You should have the world "Achtung" at the beginning of your thread title.

Behind living in Germany or with Germans, I have found Rosetta Stone and Duolingo to be helpful. I also took it all 4 years at LSU.

Duolingo would probably get you a solid base. Considering you live there, that might be enough for you to start and then just start talking to locals.

I had a German friend laugh at some of the translations Duolingo uses, but take those as learning opportunities.

When I studied abroad in Munich, the nearby American consulate helped me find a language center in a local neighborhood to help continue learning. Basically, I would just go and converse with a German teacher for about an hour and a half. They had it as part of their EU immersion and integration. It was only about $20 euro per lesson, and I thought it was very valuable.

This was in 2011, so not sure if it that is still available to American students and expats, but it could be worth the effort.

Would also just recommend this. Germans really like to practice their English, so it could be beneficial to just try to do a back-and-forth with what you know over a beer.

Radio Lingua has a free coffee break German podcast with some really good lessons.

There are also some slow German read along apps.

The above are good at teaching you useful conversation: how to order in a restaurant, ask for change, directions, etc.

They can be paired with something like duo lingo or Rosetta Stone which are good at teaching vocabulary.

Viel Glück!

ETA: Pimsleur audiobooks are better than Rosetta Stone imo. You really need to hear conversation to be able to understand it rather than word matching like duo lingo.

Can't emphasize how good the coffee break podcasts are. They're free and helped me the most. Between that and you living there, you should be conversational in a matter of weeks.

If you're stationed at Ramstein, you are fortunate to be surrounded by real life resources to learn some German.

But, be aware that the locals don't speak the same German taught to foreigners. Foreigners learn "Hoch Deutsch". The locals near Ramstein speak "Platt Deutsch." There are only slight differences between the two, but, the more you learn the more you will notice the local accent.

Have fun!

Viel Spass !

The dad of a friend of mine took German at LSU in the 30s. Got a lot of practice listening to Hitler on shortwave - the Fuhrer spoke slowly and distinctly. You might try listening to some of his tapes.

Only thing I could think of Alles klar, Herr Kommissar?

Other than that, Rosetta Stone.
