THE BEST of the best to fly $20,000,000 jets

School, licenses, and flight time combined is astronomically expensive. An airliner won’t sniff you until you’ve reached 1,500 hours in the air (ATP license). It’ll take a while to pay off loans if he goes that route.
exactly and this is where I am at. The flight school near me charges $60,000 to get to 270 hours or so. then I need to work as a flight instructor for DOG shite money till I get to 1500 hours all while trying to repay these loans (Which I cant even get approved for in the first place)

but ones like American Eagle are under $30k.
Don't think I'd trust a pilot who makes so little.

Guard is the most cost effective and fastest way to the airlines baw, end of thread

AE is hurting so bad for pilots right now they are paying $30k and up sign on bonuses
The numbers I heard for major airline pilots were WAY ABOVE that quoted figure, and that was for like 14 days a month. Why would a Lt. Commander leave the Navy for $102K a year? With base pay, housing allowances, etc. that would be a major pay cut.

For sure. I started at LATech in the aviation program. Booze as well as tempered expectations made me leave.

I spoke with many pilots when I was traveling extensively for work. I was surprised with how many were not formerly military aviators.
There are schools which train students to become pilots for the regional airlines--the increase in use of regional jets means more pilots are needed. The starting salary isn't great but it's a way to start a career.
Corporate aviation and the freight companies also need pilots.
There is a lot of demand for pilots, good luck with the pursuit of your dream career.

Will be in contact with my nearest air guard.

you have to sort of look down the road a ways, which is kind of a pilot's mentality, the O4 can stay in the reserves, with all of the benefits, fly for the airlines, with all of the benefits, two incomes, more earning potential and more earning years with the airlines, two retirements, and as far as the "median" salary, I've already hit 3X that this year, with another quarter to go

30k sign on bonus. Not salary

don't limit it to one, they want to see that you are hungry for it, make them fight over you

What other branches would you recommend?

ATP in Houston or Dallas for fast track. It’s pricey but it’s quick. And you can get federal student loans. Some regionals offer tuition reimbursement but it’s still not enough IMO.
I’m in same boat as you. Sick of the corporate office life at 27 and ready to pursue a lifelong dream. But of course no money to do so.

I plead ignorance to the OT on my fighter jet comment. How difficult is it to get into a progam to fly their C-130's
Forgive me for being an a-hole but if you're the type of guy who is worried about how "difficult" it is to get into a program then you have no chance of ever doing anything noteworthy with your life.

Are you doing military just to get hours? If so
Air Force, Navy, even USCG has a few fixed wing aircraft.
Military recruiters will tell you that you only need 750 hours for a restricted ATP with military service, but the airlines won't be interested if you have that with less than 1000 hours turbine time.

I know. I quoted the $102K figure later in the post.

This is what I'm talking about. I completely understand leaving a $130K (some of it untaxed) job for the possibility to make $250K+.

each state has a Guard unit, usually several, with different missions, i.e. different aircraft, just go on line and google state guard units, LANG, for example gives info on La guard units, get their contact info and call to set up a tour, they will advise you to visit multiple units as well, they have to get to know you and get a feel for you as they will likely be spending a lot of time with you over the next few years
ETA: if airlines are your end goal, I would advise against active duty as the current commitment is wings plus 10 years, iirc, in the guard you have a commitment but can still get on with the airlines while fulfilling the commitment

Not to shite on everything, but just be aware that it might be very difficult to break in if you're considering spending the $80k required out of pocket to do it.
I have a friend who graduated the Air Force Academy, is a Lt. Col. in the Air Force with several thousand hours (some combat) in tankers, has command and ops experience from his later years, and is approaching his retirement from the USAF.
He's begun the recruitment process with several airlines and even with his gobs of flight time in multi-turbine widebodies and proven administrative skills as a commander, he is not a shoe-in to get a position. He likely will, but the point is that even with all of that experience, nobody's throwing offers at him now to ensure they secure his services when he separates from the USAF. He's just another name in the hat.
