Doesn't LATech have some sort of pilot program?

yeah but if he has a degree that would be kind of a waste of time and money, it would delay him getting himself to being a marketable commodity

I plead ignorance to the OT on my fighter jet comment. How difficult is it to get into a progam to fly their C-130's

You don't have to be a fricken fighter pilot to fly a commercial airline. I've know several Navy pilots that flew transports and such then went on to fly commercial.

I have no idea... I was a submariner. Fun fact: did you know there are more airplanes at the bottom of the ocean than there are submarines in the sky?

Go talk to a recruiter... they're gonna lie their arse off to you, but go talk anyway.

LA Tech has an aviation program that will allow you to get your pilot's license plus a bachelors degree. I'd start there and then join the air force or navy. With your pilot's license and an aviation degree, you'll have a better shot at being a military pilot, and even if you fall short of that you'll likely at least get assigned to do something involving planes. After you do your military service, that would likely be more than enough to get you in with an airline.

Yes, that's a long path, but it's a long path to be a commercial pilot and this is the type of thing it takes.

Also - I say LA Tech assuming you are in Louisiana. There are other programs elsewhere.

LA tech has a great flight school. I know numerous pilots who’ve graduated and have careers flying commercial airliners.

Get a student loan, and spend the rest of your life paying it off. You’ll still be living your dream.

You do realize the military has many different types of aircraft right? Not every pilot is a "fighter jet pilot".

In the mid 80's, the Navy even had a program that trained their best candidates to fly cargo planes carrying rubber dog shite out of Hong Kong.

Airline pilot median salary is $102k.

I was just looking into their Cadet Academy and I will submit an application tonight. I do have a College degree and good health and passed my FAA Medical exam.

that's good, be proactive, in the mean time set up a visit to an Air Guard unit, multiple Guard units, to see about going that route, a little bit of a "dance," but it's the optimum way to go, military training, paid to learn, a job waiting for you, lowered FAA mins for applying to the airlines, etc.

Now is the time. My dad runs a corporate flight department and he has lost several pilots to the airlines. They are throwing huge amounts of money at pilots to recruit them.

I sort of agree with this if he has a degree already. Depends what it's in. That being said, this degree would be the best way to ensure he gets into some sort of flight school (even just transpo, cargo, etc) if/when he joins the military.

Nb4 join air force or any military. Its near impossible to become a fighter jet pilot. they only want THE BEST of the best to fly $20,000,000 jets and ive read forums where thousands of people tried joining for that sole purpose and failed.

From what I understand, you're correct that the jet slots usually go to the top 1 or 2 guys/girls, but that's not even close to the best platform to transition to the airlines. The military flies many different planes, some of which were designed to be actual passenger planes for airlines. You don't have to be top dog to land all of the multi-engine jet aircrafts, just fighter jets.

My information may be incorrect, but it comes from two friends that are Navy pilots, one of which has already transitioned to the airlines.

I’m talking the big boys, not American Eagle. Obviously you know more than me but it looks like the major airlines pay much more, but ones like American Eagle are under $30k.

School, licenses, and flight time combined is astronomically expensive. An airliner won’t sniff you until you’ve reached 1,500 hours in the air (ATP license).

It’ll take a while to pay off loans if he goes that route.
